Lady of Guadalupe Mexico

The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a huge festival in Mexico and much of the Southwestern U.S. To many people of the American continent she is the image of unity amongst the races, love of Mankind and the verification that her Son Jesus was the one true God and Savior of man.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

The story of Mary of Guadalupe begins in 1531 during the winter. Just a few miles north of Mexico City lived a very poor Aztec Indian named Juan Diego. Juan was almost sixty years old and a widower. He had no children and the only close family he had was an uncle named Juan Bernardino. Juan Bernardino had actually helped raise Juan Diego, but as the years passed their roles switched and now Diego was taking care of the older Bernardino. There was not much special about the two, but that was about to change forever.

On Saturday, December 9, 1531 Juan Diego was on his way to a nearby village to worship at a mass celebrating Our Ladies Honor. On his way there something mysterious and magical happened. As Juan was walking to the village he noticed that all of a sudden a silence had fallen. Not a normal quiet, but a complete silence, no sound at all. An unnerving stillness actually, the kind of calm that makes a person feel like a glass cover had been placed over them; blocking out the whole world. Then out of this heavy hush a voice came, calling out to Juan Diego. He noticed that this mellifluous voice seemed to be coming from an outcrop of rocks on top of a small hill. He climbed to the top of the hill and was astounded to come face to face with a young, amazingly beautiful Mexican girl. All of his senses were acute like never before, and the colors surrounding the young women seemed to be popping with vibrancy. There was a beautiful gold light emitting from the women giving her an astoundingly striking look. The Earth and flowers around her sparkled with brilliance. The young women introduced herself as the Ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of the true God, and Creator of all existence. She informed Juan Diego that she needed his help to build a temple on this spot. It would become a place where his people and all people could come to seek help and healing with their troubles and grief. The Virgin Mary would need Juan to go to Mexico City to take the message to the local Bishop.

Church of Guadalupe

Juan Diego ended up making three trips before he finally got the Bishop to really believe him. On his final trip he was coming back with the front of his cape filled with Castilian Roses; a sign from the Lady which had been requested by the Bishop. As he was granted audience with the Bishop he accidently let the cape go and the roses fell out. At first ashamed and fearful, he suddenly noticed that the room was quiet and everyone was staring at him and kneeling. On the front of his newly exposed cape was a perfect image of Our Lady. The intricate beauty and detail was astonishing and soon word was out about this miracle. Millions were baptized and brought into the love and security of the Church. Millions more came to know the story of Juan Diego and the visitation of the Holy Virgin Mary. The church requested by Mary was built, and has been flocked to by the faithful for centuries.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

To this day no-one is exactly sure what is used to make the image; the amazing color and detail remains a mystery. How a simple woven linen garment has survived all this time is also a miracle. It has survived religious persecution, floods and even a bombing. In 1999 Our Lady was given the added designation of being the protector of the unborn by Pope John Paul II. From all over the world people come to visit the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe; over a thousand a day kneel and pray to this splendid image. A true Miracle, it is a shining light for millions of believers.
