In my life I have found that yes, Truth is the Best Policy....it IS the Truth that you know that makes you free. BUT -- and this is a Big BUT --Truth is often mistaught.
We learn to be honest with ourselves, then with God, then with others....and not all people are safe to share "everything" with...sometimes people with good, honest hearts get hurt in the process of "trying" to be overly honest.
And there IS a differerance between "fact" and Truth.
First let's look at the difference between Grace and Law. Grace and Truth came by Jesus Christ, the Law was sent through Moses. So who's side is God actually on? Jesus Christ is with Grace and Truth. The Law was sent, Grace came --- Grace is personal. The Law was written on stone cold tablets --- the Law is cold. God said that He would make a New Covenant with His people; taking out the hearts of stone and giving in their place hearts of flesh -- also giving new spirits within them. The "Law" is good, and the "Law" does have purpose....but often the Law's purpose is not understood. The Law is there to show us that we need the Savior -- that's the sole purpose of the Law -- to show us that we CANNOT do it....once we receive Jesus Christ, the Law is no longer needed -- because it has no more purpose. Christ came to fulfill the Law -- and does so in each believer's life when they receive Him. He gives us new minds and new hearts -- writing His Living Word on them --- instead of the old, which is the "Letter of the Law"--which "sounds" just like Law. The "Letter of the Law" causes death, but the Spirit gives Life. The "Letter of the Law" brings with it guilt and condemnation...whereas Grace and Truth "state" forgiveness once for all, along with love and acceptance based on the obedience of Christ.
When I first started learning about integrity and honesty -- I told people "everything" because there was a lot about Grace that I did not understand. I had what some would call an over-active conscience. This caused a lot of problems, especially in my marriage -- since I had such a heart for God and I believed the "inside of the pot" should be clean too. My husband me; although I am sure he had a lot of the same type issues and thoughts.
You see, not everyone in my life was meant to be shared with and not everything was meant to be shared....not everyone is meant to see directly into us....our hearts are precious -- this is why the Lord is so Faithful to guard them. Sometimes people will attack or despise what is shared (whether it be good or not) -- in stead of sharing and showing the Love of God in the situation. So, it's best to wait and listen for God's Peace in a situation on whether to share or not -- and who with. Christ says to delight yourself in Him and He "will" give you the desires of your heart....and to bring everything to Him in prayer with thanksgiving and He "will" guard your heart with His Perfect Peace. It's nice just to be still and know.
