How Many Gods Do You Serve?

In today's society we may be serving Gods we do not realize we are serving. In the days of the Old Testament it was common practice to hear that the people served many Gods. But today in America, most people think serving more than one God sounds rather ridiculous. To better understand this we have to determine what it means to “serve God.” Are we replacing God with people, places and things? Our God is a jealous God; do we need to come back to and follow His commandments?

The Bible says, “Thou shall have no other Gods before me.” It also says that “no man can serve two masters.” We are commanded to worship and serve God only, so that we become one with Him. We are to lay aside our thoughts, feelings and desires to do God’s will. Also, we are to die to the things of this earth and focus on eternity with Jesus, the eternal prize.

In our society are we serving more than one master? Do we place God first or have we found new priorities? Who or what do we worship? When we put it in the perspective of who we place first in our lives today, I believe we are all guilty of having many Gods. We feel our jobs and the money we make are a priority. The material things, people and even sporting events rank up there too. What about our recreational activities, like overeating and smoking or drinking and drugs? We do not think of these things as Gods until we look at where we place them in our lives. We find that Gods can be anything if they come first. Our priorities have really gotten out of line. Where did we leave God?

The first four commandments out of the ten are about worshiping our God only. I would think it must be pretty important. God made us for Himself; therefore He is jealous of us. We actually should take it as a compliment that He cares so much for us.

Because of sin, it is easy to get sidetracked but we must come back to the reality of what is, and that is God. God is!!! He is first!!! He will not play second to any! Why should He? He gives us, everything; from the next bite of food, to our next answered prayer and mostly importantly to our next breath. Because of our sinful nature it is easy to get off course, but if we are to have a relationship and follow the commandments, we must get back to the commandments. Anything else is futile.

When we love God, we will bind ourselves to Him. When this world has passed away, is there any other place we would want to be but in the arms of Jesus, who sits to the right hand of God? I don’t think so! If we are living as we should, with God first in our lives, there will be only be one God to serve. And that is all we need!
