I have often asked myself this question over the years and it is an interesting topic for debate. To learn how to be spiritual, first we need to discuss what we mean by “spiritual”. There are many definitions of this which you can easily find on the internet, but I’d like to put forward my own thoughts here on maintaining our spirituality. I will start by saying that I feel us humans are a spiritual body enclosed in a physical body, you cannot have one without the other. Also I believe that when we die, or in fact the physical body dies, the spirit body leaves the physical body and takes itself up to what is known as the spirit world. There are different views on what happens to it next, but we will leave that aside just for now.
So, now we could say that as we have a spirit body, which I believe does not die and as such we ARE spiritual without having to do anything spiritual. That is the concept of what we are all about, but the two forms – physical and spiritual usually get separated in general terms and come across as two totally separate forms. But, we are physical and spiritual beings at the same time. In my experience, when you ask most people what it means to be spiritual, they think of religion, meditation and “weird” people who go to church and read the bible. But to me, that is an example of how we have lost who we truly are.
Now to define the word “spiritual” in great detail would take a long time, but my feelings are that we are spiritual first and physical second. Let me try to explain that, we are all spiritual beings that are known as souls, indeed, we have a soul (or spirit) that desires to learn and experience many different things. Now, the only way to gain that experience is through the vehicle that is the physical body and the best place to learn is on the earth.
So we decide what lessons we need to learn and choose a physical body to use for that experience. I believe too that the family you are born into, the time and geographical location are all important factors too, but that is for another discussion. So, basically that’s all there is to it, to be spiritual is to be ourselves, although there is much more to it than that. We have lost our spirituality.
I think the main problem is absolute attachment to the physical as identity. Means we forget the spiritual aspect and trade it in for a more "seeing is believing"approach. Because our world revolves around the physical and form we are constantly confronted by it. You are right that we have lost our spirituality, we have put ourselves above "god"and nature.
