Islam And Lure Of Materialism

There is a great difference we can find in the lifestyle of modern man as compared to man of dark ages. The lifestyle of past being was very simple, natural and close to spirituality. Those people used to live in rural side and lived in a groups and social units close to each other. They followed some universal values of ethics. Their thinking patterns were so pure and filled with passion and emotions of caring and love with each other. They displayed a great precedent of unity. But person of current time is altogether different in many cases.

Nowadays people are more materialistic and greedy of sophisticated things. The inventions and discoveries of science have brought a tremendous alteration in lives of people. The advent of technology has brought a revolution in the lifestyle and lessened the work load of today’s gentleman. But meanwhile, present trends of modern period have changed the modes of thinking, dealings, behaviors, habits and outlook as well.

Currently people are more concerned about their materialistic needs and desires and are lacking spirituality and ethical values. Money, luxury living, delicious meals, innovative accommodation are main goals of present-day person. Where technology and development in the fields of industry, health, traveling, and housing have brought lenience at same time he is moving away from his natural character and duty assigned by the Creator. This materialistic approach has invited several social vices and evil practices like corruption, bribery, fraud, cheating in order to fulfill wants of materialistic hungers. Everyone seems in race to take over other in the competition of worldly wishes and gems. Thus hey are facing mental and spiritual issues like frustration, anxiety, stress, and depression. Islam also speaks about this approach.

Islam is not against development of materialism things and accomplishments of physical necessities but it promotes that he must meet his worldly essentials first. After attainment of good and quality lifestyle, one must seek for spirituality and religious development in order to obey commands of the Creator. But issue is that we are preferring and working for our sophisticated needs and wellbeing. We are lacking our ethical and moral values prescribed by our God. The teachings of the Holy Qurans enjoin Muslims that they must not exploit the property and rights of others in order to meet their needs. We have neglected natural and real course of hard work and efforts. We want to become rich in overnight. We all are looking for short-cuts. Almost all disciplines of life like medical science, governance, economic activities, trade, business, we do not follow the universal values of ethics but we just please our self by availing money through illegal and unethical means.

Islam does not disapprove the merit and execution of money a but it advocates that one must use it for their basic necessities. One must earn it within parameters of ethics and through right and legal means. Because, if someone avails wealth through illegal resources and channels or by exploiting the rights of others, he will miss the essence of peace of mind a lasting sense of security. Islam put forward idea of moderation. The Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) was a great example of it. He was ruler of Medina but he spent a very simple and down to earth life. He never run behind money or kingship and other worldly gems. Today’s all spiritual and psychological issues are outcomes of our running behind worldly gains. It is only spirituality and ethics that give you pure love and lasting peace of mind.
