So many times we do not have because we do not ask. God says in His Word that we have not because we ask not, but it seems like we are always asking, so what's up?
Growing up we are taught, in an off hand way, to not ask for things that we need or want. How? Through feelings of shame, guilt, and condemnation. True not every child goes through this, but our society is filled with adults that have experienced childhood abuse or have grown-up in disfunctional homes. When a child asks for something they need or want, and then they are made to feel guilt, shame, or condemnation for what they have done, this is wrong. If this happens over and over again, one can imagine the effect it can have.
When we grow up with shame, guilt and condemnation, we learn to approach God in the same manner. In my case, God has had to re-teach me in approaching Him. Having learned shame as a child, He has taught me that I am to have delight in asking Him for things that I want and need. This is new to me. And so often I have learned that I do not ask for what I want and need, but instead have asked "all" around the exact point instead. For example: this morning I was not feeling well (I wasn't sick, I just felt sad; and growing up you just grinned and bore this). Well, out of my mouth came,"LORD God, will You cause me to feel better today?" This is how He showed me I have been asking amiss. Maybe a long time ago I would have said, " LORD God help me "do" this so I feel better today", or I used to would have grinned and bore it and played some upbeat music. I hope you get the point. But He wanted me to JUST ASK point blank. I had been beating around the bush and missing the "exact point" of the thing that I was wanting/needing. And sometimes we endup asking according to others wants and needs and not what we want and need.
We do not have to feel ashamed when we come to God (or guilt or condemned). But if we do, we can talk to Him freely about it, I know growing up, I was made to feel shame a lot. God understands these types things. And He will work through anything that anyone needs, no matter what it may be.
We do not have because we do not ask, or we ask amiss. God is a beyond gooood God. Anyone who has a problem in this area, simply go to God and ask for His ability in asking, He will give it to you. Ask Him to help you pinpoint your needs and desires. Delighting in Him, He will give you the desires of your heart. And if you are dealing with shame, there is a Promise for you: Isa 61:7 For their shame they shall have double...
Remember, you always precious and beloved.
