Spirituality: Concerning Things Of the Spirit

Sometimes it seems like a part of ourselves is in possession of a knowledge that is above what can be perceived without our ordinary senses. We feel like we are connected with something greater that exists beyond our observable world. We call this feeling, this experience, spirituality.

The word “spirituality” contains the word “spirit”. Spirit is something that we usually understand to mean our non-corporeal substance, or consciousness. We, as humans, often make a clear division between body and spirit. Some also distinguish between the spirit and the soul. The soul is part of what makes you “you”. It is your thoughts, your feelings, and your emotions. In short, it is your personality. The spirit, on the other hand, is a greater, or higher, consciousness, something that connects you to what is beyond.

This mysterious thing that exists beyond is often described as a power. Because this power has to do with experiences beyond our physical world, things that are difficult to explain are often classed under the heading “spiritual”. Just think of intuition, paranormal experiences, near-death experiences, and divine interventions by angels or by chance. These are all examples of spiritual experiences. As are dreams. When dreams seem to come from another place, when they seem to contain a message from beyond, they are also counted as being part of the spiritual domain.

Even though many believe that there is a clear distinction between the soul and the spirit, you can't separate the two completely. They influence each other mutually. For example, a spiritual peak experience, which is an transcending and uplifting experience, like feeling a divine connection, seeing angels, or a having a near-death experience, influences our personality. Likewise, many people believe that their thinking, which is part of the personality, can influence what happens around them.

From a psychological perspective, every person colors his or her world with their own perceptions, mental filters, and learned attitudes. This makes you behave in a certain way. When you behave in a certain way towards other people, you can expect to get a predicable reaction. When you change your attitude, their behavior will also change. That is why the notion of positive thinking is an important part of spiritual thought. The belief that thoughts have real power and can influence other people's behavior and what happens in the world in a positive way is what attracts many to spiritualism.

Some of the main themes that spirituality deals with are:

- that there is a higher form of consciousness;

- that there is no true death, only a transformation of energy into a new form;

- that every person has personal responsibility;

- and that life is what you make it.

But our story of spirituality doesn't end here. Spirituality is not just an end-goal. The road towards that goal is just as important. For many people the road towards spirituality is a road of transformation that involves connecting with the spirit. Transformation comes through practicing modesty, gratitude, understanding, acceptance, forgiveness, and the willingness to make sacrifices. This is often done by meditation, prayer, or contemplation. These are all ways of getting closer to that moment of ego-transcending communion with creation.
