The Secret Of Successful Mindfulness Meditation

When I started to meditate at the age of 19 I had no idea about what mindfulness meditation was all about and I had a naïve idea that I was embarking upon the path of enlightenment like the Buddha. I had been suffering from depression and I knew that going clubbing and dressing up in smart designer clothes was not going to feed my soul and allow me to experience inner contentment. So I started to read books on meditation, spirituality, Buddhism and Zen. It took 15 years of inquiry to understand a major flaw in my understanding of meditation practice. This article is to help you not make the same mistake and help you see that the practice of meditation is far easier than what you had realized.

You do not have to sit crossed legged to experience deep meditation. It took me 3 years to muster having the courage to sit on a chair to practice meditation. I have grown up in the west. I have not been fortunate to have the opportunity to practice sitting cross legged from an early age. I understand that there are westerners who are able to sit comfortably cross legged. If you are ones of these lucky people, then this is OK But I can remember at the time when I was learning to meditate, I felt that I was doing something wrong by not being able to sit in lotus posture like the Buddha, and continued to have difficulty in settling down towards a relaxed state of mind. It is from my own direct experience that I see that meditation can be practiced with great success whilst sitting in a chair. The primary focus is for your body to be comfortable and free from tension.

You do not have to escape to the monastery, mountains, forests or caves to practice meditation. I am a married man and live in Derby City, United Kingdom. I have a 2 and half year old daughter and interact with many people online and offline and yet I am able to practice meditation, whilst living an active and vibrant life. In my early twenties I was tempted to visit Thailand and practice meditation. I thought at the time that I needed to get away from life to experience the enlightened state. But our ordinary life is the perfect playground to learn about who we are, how to practice patience, compassion and connecting to the present moment.

There is a certain seduction to be drawn to exotic ideas or the grass always feels greener on the other side. But I am amazed how living in a City, everyday I am learning about how to be less reactive and more responsive. Life enables you to have the opportunity to clearly see what really presses your buttons and allows a space for transformation.

Meditation is not about experiencing a state absent of thoughts. This was one of my greatest stumbling blocks. I truly thought that the goal of meditation was to acquire a state of mind where there was no activity of thinking. In my guided meditations I make it a point for people to learn to allow their thinking to be present in the meditation practice.

5 years ago, at the age of 35, I decided to let go of practicing any formal techniques of meditation. I gave up trying to fight thinking and simply practiced dropping into relaxation. I found that by allowing thoughts to be present without judgment, I would find thoughts dropping away of their own accord and there would be moments of incredible heightened awareness. Meditation begun to be a delicious and profoundly joyful experience. I had looked at mediation in the past as a means to an end. Something that you do to achieve something. But now I see meditation as the natural state of being a normal human being and that we can live our life in a meditative manner.

The key to a successful mindfulness meditation practice is to begin with small steps and to be consistent. If this means that you practice for 5 minutes of meditation every day for the next 40 days without stopping than this is better than trying to sit for 2 hours every day and ending up only completing 3 hours in the 40 day span and with longs days in between the actual practice sessions. Meditation helps you to see things as they are, become more patient, more joyful, intelligent.

Regular meditation will help you gain more clarity about how to move forward with important decisions. I hope that after reading this article you get inspired to practice mindfulness meditation or at least be more gentle with yourself. You do not have to make the same mistakes that I had made and you can have the opportunity of experiencing the positive aspects of regular meditation, without the headaches that I had gone through.

Meditation is great for getting through life`s difficulties. I learned through a martial art called Yi Quan. The meditation was focused on fighting techniques but it taught mindfulness all the same. What was really great about it was that it promoted joint health and power/flexibility. All you have to do is stand in an orthodox boxing stance with your hands up in front of you with your palms open. It will take some time to get past the pain of fatigue in your shoulders but eventually you won`t even notice as you focus more and more.
