The Spiritual Benefits Meditation Can Offer

There is much to be said about the physical and emotional improvements meditation can present, but what about the spiritual benefits meditation has to offer? Much can be gained by realizing its use for the mind, body and spirit.

Meditation is commonly associated with the iconic Buddha and his quest for enlightenment. But evidence shows that it was used thousands of years before, dating back to the primitive nomads in their cave drawings.

Scholars have suggested that our ancestral hunters and gatherers would gaze into the fire, achieving a dazed like consciousness as a form of relaxed state. From here, meditation has developed into a practice that we are familiar with today.

And as it has grown through the ages, meditation has influenced religious practices around the world. No matter what religious denomination you may follow, meditation is sure to be present in some form.

Religious practices such as silent prayer, repetitive chants and even some ceremonial dances all have a common thread with meditation. They all bring an awareness.

Mediation can even bring a sense of spirituality for those that may consider themselves atheist or agnostic, or losing faith.

To share a little background, I lost faith in my religious institution years ago. I always believed there was something out there, I just couldn't put my finger on it. A lot of things just didn't make sense to me, so I refused to follow something I honestly didn't understand. I went through the motions for my parents, thinking it really didn't matter much.

But then, years later, I went through some difficult times that would make anyone question their faith, but I didn't have any! Friends would suggest I pray, but to who? A god I only called upon when I was in trouble? Seemed hypocritical of me.

Someone suggested to try meditation, but I fought the idea for some time. I mean, how was I going to be able to relax my mind with all the stress from the issues I was facing?

Finally I gave in. At first, it was difficult to settle down my thoughts. I would only be able to sit there for a couple minutes at a time. But after practice, it got easier and faster to reach a state of relaxation.

The spiritual benefits meditation has to offer simply helped me connect with myself again. It returned a sense of faith I hadn't ever felt before and found something I could believe in

I believe we are all on our own path to teach us our individual lessons. Meditation can be an opportunity to remind yourself to appreciate the moments and experiences from the journey, restoring faith.
