Contentment seems to be missing, because everyone is looking for it! We go through life trying to find contentment in some of the strangest places. We will look for it through our successes in life, through people we meet and even through our worldly processions. There seems to be such a need to find this thing called contentment. It leaves us with these questions; where do we find it and if we found it, would it really be the answer we have been looking for?

Contentment simply means to be satisfied in one’s situation or to have enjoyment of whatever happens or comes. All of us are guilty of saying “if I just had a good job, if I could just find the right partner or if I had that big house and could go on all those trips, I know I would be content.” Is it so easy to expect something or someone to fulfill and satisfy us?

On my journey of finding contentment my first revelation was learning that nothing or no one could give me the contentment I desired. In time, the limelight fades on the accolades of achievements. We are beaten down from the endless hours of work and stress in search of our success, but no contentment is found.

We begin to feel lonely, so our next idea is to find that right person who can complete us. The people of this world are not perfect and they will disappoint us. That is just the way is. When we begin to see their faults and they begin to see ours, then we have another whole concept of not being content.

Finally we want to fill our lives with things, processions and entertainment. We are sure these things will bring us the ultimate contentment we want, but in time these things will fade in beauty and they will rust and mold. As newer things become available our processions do not hold the excitement they once did. A trip, now that could just be the ticket! Although it can be enjoyable and memorable, it is only for the moment and will give us no lasting contentment.

So if of none of these ideas give us contentment, how do we get it? Paul shows us some things to look at. He says contentment is independent of material things and of external circumstances. Also we are to be content in whatever state, everywhere and in all things. Contentment does not come naturally or even automatically. Paul explains we learn and understand through our experiences and by learning God’s Word. Well the most important question is left to answer. Where do we find contentment? I have only one answer and that is (in) the Lord Jesus Christ. In Christ all things are possible and we will find the total contentment we have longed for.

Jesus is our thing or procession that will never fade, rust or mold. What a prize! He will take us on trips we never dreamed if we will open His word. He is the partner who is perfect for us and will never leave us and will please us in every way. No there is nothing, not anyone in this world that will ever give us true contentment. Contentment can only be found in Christ!
