In the modern manufacturing environment, there are a number of issues that are common to most businesses. Many of these issues may be causing problems with your bottom line and your ability to deliver quality product to your customers.
You may have even tried productivity systems to try and get your operation moving again. Perhaps you found some success, but then again, perhaps not. It depends on whether the system you chose addresses the real problems of a modern manufacturing company.
3 Common Issues in Manufacturing Environment:
While these issues can affect other kinds of businesses, the focus here will be those engaged in manufacturing and/or production.
• Waste: This is a constant drain on any business, but particularly in the manufacturing sector because every element that is wasted add to the cost of goods manufactured, and has a direct negative effect on the bottom line. There are several kinds of waste that need to be addressed:
- Time: The ultimate un renewable resource. Every time a worker loses a second walking around a cabinet, it may not seem like much at the time. But if that unnecessary motion takes place 100 times a day, in 100 days, you have lost more than 166 hours.
- Materials: Your product requires supplies and materials to make or assemble. And whether you measure your materials by the once, the pound, the ton, or the square inch, you can be sure that your suppliers are going to collect full price on every scrap that they delivered, regardless of whether you used it or not.
- Resources: Your plant has certain common resources that are used for multiple purposes, but whose cost still is figured in cost of goods manufactured. Keeping a tight rein on these is just as important as watching the wasted material. Things like water, power, equipment and even floor space are valuable commodities that are not to be squandered.
• Cost: Cutting waste is a quick way to increase your profit level, but another is to control your costs. This can be difficult in many environments where your supplier may have the upper hand when it comes to setting prices. However, by focusing on the problem and dedicating an appropriate amount of resources to its solution, you can achieve ongoing savings without sacrificing quality.
• Communications: One of the fastest ways to choke an organization is to cut off its lines of communications. Companies who are successful are almost always companies where information moves freely throughout the system. And not just from management to the workforce. Providing the workers with a simple mechanism for making comments, observations and suggestions, with the expectation that they will be taken seriously, is very empowering. It also creates an environment where management has a good grasp of what is really happening on the shop floor, which can help solve problems when they are still small.
