5 Tips for Managing Christmas Stress

We’re rapidly approaching one of the most stressful times of the years where thousands of people pile unnecessary pressure on themselves and land up feeling exhausted after what should be a celebration. Dealing with Christmas stress is no different from any other type of stress – you have choices and you can take steps to minimise the amount of stress that you normally experience at this time of year. Listed below are 5 tips for managing Christmas stress

1. Only spend what you have

It may be tempting to use your credit cards to buy presents that you feel you have to give, but the stress of the bills that will arrive on your doorstep at the beginning of January is just not worth it. Don’t make excuses about ‘having to buy’ for children or anyone else. You really don’t and it’s about making sensible choices. Set a realistic budget and stick to it.

2. Don’t buy too much food

The shops are not closed for a couple of weeks. There is no need to buy huge amounts of food. Many people say they do this to avoid having to go shopping, but they often still do. It’s well known that as a country we throw away huge amounts of food and Christmas is no different. Buy what you need and if you worry about your weight be aware of buying and eating more food than normal.

3 Don’t set yourself up for stress

If you really enjoy having 12 people for lunch and doing all the work then do so. But if you’re doing things because you only feel obliged and don’t really enjoy it – then it becomes very stressful. Again you can make all the excuses in the world about having no choice – but it isn’t true. It may be difficult sometimes to make the choices which are best for you and it may entail some compromise but just meekly taking on things that will leave you feeling stressed is not sensible.

4. Find some 'me' time

If you’re an adult and you have responsibilities for children, parents, relatives, friends, partner, work, preparing meals, present buying and wrapping and any amount of other jobs associated with the Christmas season, make sure that you schedule in some me time. This means escaping for a brisk walk, soaking in a hot bath, taking half an hour to read ... Choose a variety of strategies that can help relieve your stress as quickly as possible

5. Communicate effectively

Poor communication causes a lot of stress in households across the land. Remember you cannot change other people, but you can change yourself. Make sure that you listen to what other people are saying, be aware of the words you use when you speak and the impact they have on other people. Don ‘t make assumptions that people can mind read what you want. You have to tell them!

However you choose to celebrate Christmas, it should be a happy time, not one filled with stress. You may have multiple responsibilities or you may have very few but it is up to you to make choices that don’t add to what can be a stressful time. Key issues are avoiding taking on too much, avoiding spending too much and remembering to communicate effectively with friends and loved ones. It's also important that you have strategies to relieve any stresses that you experience as quickly as possible.
