An Obvious Stress, Often Overlooked

I got up early this morning before work, so I could get on my bike and go for some stress relieving exercise before I launched into the day. I allowed about an extra hour, give or take and I was feeling really focused. While I was rushing around getting ready to go, my eye fell onto an unpaid Bill and I took the time to check it out. Over 1 hour later I re-surfaced from my accounts and copies of my payslips and then it dawned on me just how stressful finances are.

You may be one of the really fortunate ones who is incredibly organized, focused and successful with managing finances and then most likely you are with your life in general, but this is not the case for the less fortunate of us. Bottom line is – its our financial commitments that demand us to have an income, that keeps us at our jobs throughout the years and creates routines in our lives good and bad.

Have you ever thought about finances like this or have you just slid into a mindset of acceptance that balancing finances and credit cards is a part of what you do?

The reality is that FINANCES ARE STRESSFUL. Even with a well paying job there never seems to be enough to go around and putting the brakes on the spending is a real struggle.

So after my efforts this morning, I thought I just might Google Budgeting Advice and see what would come up. 15,500,000 sites later……of course I hit the first one as the effort of choosing was too much. Budgeting Advice was first and with it a simple free E-book download of 5 simple steps. The book only has about 9 pages and I flicked through it in 5 minutes and realized that if I applied this advice it would help my position.

Now my purpose in sharing this isn’t about the financial advice but it is about waking up to what is creating stress in our lives and what very simple steps we can take to get sorted. Finance is an underpinning factor in everyone’s life and it is the driving force as to how we spend the bulk of our hours. I had not realized before that my resistance to checking on my bills or hating the end of the year taxes was actually a symptom of stress.

Avoiding burnout may mean that our focus should not be on the obvious issue i.e. work, but rather look at why we are there in the first place. Getting control over other aspects of our lives e.g. finances, may be what shifts us out of that burnout mindset.
