Avoid Perfectionism at Christmas And Control Your Stress Levels

Christmas is rapidly approaching. How do you approach your Christmas preparations? Are you the type of person who likes to do everything in the two or three weeks before the big day or are you someone who prefers to be well prepared so you can relax a bit? People like to approach it in different ways but it seems that regardless of how you plan some people find it an incredibly stressful time, particularly if you’re a bit of a perfectionist. Perfectionism at Christmas can ruin the whole event and cause untold stress. Here are 5 things you'll want to avoid.

1. Don’t try and keep up with the ‘Joneses’

Don’t spend time trying to compete with other people’s celebrations, whether it be neighbours, relations, or friends. Just because someone else whipped up an impromptu feast for 15 last year doesn’t mean that you have to return the favour. Too many people stress themselves out trying to 'Keep up with the Joneses' . It’s not necessary. Don't do it.

2. Don’t expect everything to be ’perfect’

If you have a tendency towards perfectionist tendencies then you probably want to do everything to be just so. But actually things can't ever be perfect and things may go wrong or just not as 'right' as you hoped. It doesn't really matter and piling on extra stress on yourself just because you want things to be 'just so' is pointless. Remember it's supposed to be a happy time.

3. Don’t spurn other people’s offers of help

Okay some people are notoriously lazy at Christmas and all the work will fall on one or two people. And yes that is usually the women of the household. However, if people offer their help, be careful not to turn it down. It can actually cause tension within a household if other members feel that their help isn’t good enough. This extra tension can cause extra stress on all sides. Okay you may have to bit your tongue because they don’t do it your way – but so be it. Try and embrace it. And perhaps you could use that time for a little relaxation for yourself including some stress relief activities.

4. Don’t try and do too much

Some people put a huge amount of pressure on themselves to accommodate everyone and put on lots of activities as well as attending different events and think that somehow they should be able to manage everything. It’s okay to say no and only do what you’re able to. There’s no rule that says that you have to take up every opportunity that is offered. It doesn’t make you less of a person to say no and it will also help to keep your stress within manageable levels.

5. Don’t try to be all things to all people

Most people have competing responsibilities at Christmas time, whether it be as a daughter or son, as a mother or father, as a partner or spouse, as a friend, as a carer, as a neigbour. People will want your time, but you can’t be all things to all people along with all the other things that you have to do over Christmas. So be clear about your priorities and how you are going to spend your time. If you have to give some of your time after the Christmas season so be it, but don’t wear yourself out trying to do everything over a matter of a few days.

Don’t let any perfectionist tendencies you have increase your stress levels and stop you having a good time.

I agree with you about just getting things done and allowing other people to help when they offer to help us. Setting priorities is very important. It keeps us from going in too many different directions.
