Avoid Working More Than 40 Hours Each Week

How many hours do you work per week? 25? 30? 40? More than 40? You may love what you do, and you may want to spend every waking moment at work. Working many hours each week can be good in terms of how much you earn, but it can also be bad.

One reason why it is bad to work more than 40 hours each week is because you need time to relax. It is very difficult to relax if you spend the majority of your time on work-related tasks. With this much time devoted to work, you spend most of your time either at your job or thinking about your job. It leaves very little time to do or think about much of anything else.

Another reason it is bad to spend too much time at work is because sleep is very important. Working too many hours often means sacrificing sleep. Lack of sleep can result in problems with productivity, memory, and relationships. Sufficient sleep, on the other hand, can mean good relationships, a good memory, and a very productive and pleasant day.

Working too much can also make you dull and boring. Briefly step away from your work to go have some fun. What you do for fun is up to you, but it is important. When you come back to your work, you will be looking at it with fresh eyes and new energy.

Finally, working too many hours each week often means missing out on exercise and time with family and friends. You and your work will suffer if you do not take a break. For example, you might write short stories for magazines. You might have many ideas for stories and enjoy writing every day. If you do not take breaks, however, you will notice mistakes in your writing, such as typographical errors or careless errors in sentence structure. Mistakes like these are common but very embarrassing, and they can be avoided by taking breaks. If you do not allow yourself to get too tired, you can catch your mistakes before a piece is published. That way, you can save your reputation and publish professional work.

How do you know how long to work and when you should take a break? One very effective method is to work thirty minutes, and then take a thirty-minute break. Working thirty minutes is just long enough that as the period is ending, you should notice that you are beginning to feel tired. You are not exhausted, however. You just need a break. At this point, you should step away from your work. Consider turning on some music and running during your break. You have spent the past thirty minutes sitting, so some physical activity will help you. After your run, you will likely notice that you feel energized, and then you can get back to your work. You should be able to pick up where you left off with no difficulty. You can then produce quality work.

Call it a day at 5 p.m. If you started your work at 9:00 that morning, stopping work at 5:00 will mean that you have worked eight hours that day. Eight hours is a full day. At this point, you need some time for yourself. Close your computer, turn off your mouse, put your work away, and have a great evening.

I have a tendency to fall more on Robs side of the fence on this one. I haven't had an actual job in several years, but my work week is dictated on what needs to get done. Ill spent 80 to 90 even if roll outs or projects are ending up, but the norm seems to be 50 to 60. I stay as organized as possible and actually PLAN my down time. Not the best fix but at least its there. Thanks for the read:)

It has been several years since my last job. I am writing and pursuing a Master's degree. My week probably consists of more than 40 hours of work. I am so passionate about writing that I may get a great idea at 10:00p.m., write the article, and submit it. Like you said, the number of hours a person works depends on what needs to be done. Thanks for reading! :)

Sorry Hollie I do not agree with you on this one, sometimes it is necessary to work a lot more than 40 hours, specially when young. It aids to build a reputation, is good for the management to see dedication and loyalty to the company, and a willingness to work will never stand you in bad stead when promotion is being considered. My profession is such that I would work a 55 to 60 hour a week, I never suffered from it and if nothing else I became known for dedication and attention to detail. The tendency today is to clock watch and return home when the clock says so instead of completing a project that may take an extra hour or two. Just my personal opinion, and there are probably millions that disagree with me, but I have to be honest in my comments. The article is good and well written, detailing good points as you see it, well done and keep on keeping on!
