Healing Through Music

Whenever I get stressed out and can’t think straight I make sure I take time out and listen to my favourite tunes. You could say I get my healing through music!

I now know that the little time I take to completely lose myself in some really positive and inspiring music, the more it ‘resets my batteries’ and I can begin again on the task at hand.

Music has the capacity to take us on any journey that we choose. It literally colours our world. Have you ever noticed that by listening to an upbeat song you can indeed become upbeat too?

And this is no wonder because all the studies recently show the brains’ plasticity i.e. its ability to change. This means that our brains have a wonderful intelligence that responds to beautiful music (or any music for that matter) as soon as we hear it, thereby changing our mood.

I speak from my own personal experience of how each piece of music makes me feel. I am very sensitive to sound and therefore purposefully choose what I listen to. My all-time favourites to alter my mood are those from nature. Like sounds of a rainforest or waves lapping at the beach. Or songs that evoke feelings of inspiration, joy and love. If I close my eyes the feelings are stronger and become more effective.

And don’t just stop at listening to music, if you feel comfortable enough (or even if you don’t) get your body moving along to the beat. Have a little boogie right where you are with no inhibitions, you know the drill. Hee Hee.

I love the fact that I can use music as a tool to get whisked away from current circumstances that may be getting to me and enjoy a little reprieve. Then once the song or songs are over, my mind has had the chance to be free and will often entertain a new perspective that will change the course of my day.

Its just another little tool I use to make sure I am living in the present moment.

To those individuals that can play an instrument and make music – I applaud you! Truly you are blessed to have learnt and embody such a glorious talent to share with this world.

We don’t have to be stuck in our seemingly endless cycles of the brain’s chatter. Escape with me too. Use music to uplift your soul, whatever makes your heart sing, and do it often.

Your stories, comments and feedback always welcome.

Yes, music is a therapy in itself. I usually enjoy the silence myself, interestingly enough, as I have trouble processing too much sound all at once. The other reason is that music truly draws me in and I can't switch it off to concentrate on other things. I have lyrics in my head from 40 years ago! The best music is the song that unexpectedly causes me to close my eyes and listen for the pure beauty of it. Rare, but very special. Enjoyed your thought provoking article.

Oh nice surprise when that happens for you with a beautiful song. I like listening to waves in the background when I am studying. Good point about the silence too :)

Great to 'hear' Shawn (excuse the pun!) I still find it incredible how such a small thing many take for granted has such huge potential to impact lives if so allowed to.
