Hormonal Mood Swings

Moodiness caused by hormones, cross a broad spectrum of our lives and is not exclusive to a particular sex, although it will affect the typical female way more than it would the typical male over the course of their lifetime.

The average teenager of either sex is simply a hotbed of emotional turmoil. These emotions can oscillate to and fro during the course of a single day. It is during these rude jolts into puberty that the sex hormones of both sexes spike in intensity. The result is the stereotypical teenager forced to express their frustration and anger in a verbal tirade of abuse.

The much maligned premenstrual syndrome (PMS) which so many women are only too eager to blame for their irrational behavior is another source of chemical maladjustment. The female tries to maintain a delicate balance between progesterone and estrogen levels within her body. This balance is never static but mirrors the phases of the menstrual cycle, leaving a trail mood swings in its wake.

As the female matures and approaches menopause, the ovaries start to taper off their production of estrogen and progesterone, once again allowing their emotions to rear their ugly head. Numerous corrective measures have focused on estrogen replacement alone, but this has been questioned in recent scientific literature, and there are signs that a more holistic balance between the two hormones are being emphasized lately.

Hormone imbalances and the resultant state of mind may be caused by a number of factors including genetic predisposition, lack of exercise, birth control pills, tumors, pregnancy and lactation. The greatest contributing factor appears to be obesity which leaves a cascade of health issues including the dreaded feelings of depression and irritability.

Therapeutic intervention is generally prescribed although not limited to menopausal women, with the favored method being Hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Historically the most common method has been estrogen replacement which can be administered as a patch, cream or in tablet form. In general itis administered at the lowest possible dose necessary to produce symptomatic relief.

The alternative choice is known as HRT combination therapy which is essentially a combination of estrogen and progesterone. This too is generally administered at the lowest possible dose required to produce the desired effect. Side effects of both methods include blood clots, irregular spotting and fluid retention. These are not issues to be scoffed at.

Another less common occurrence of hormonal mood swings accompanies the abuse of anabolic steroids. The media has painted a somewhat brutal yet true picture of these which often find expression in highly aggressive outcomes. Steroid supplementation may be a medical requirement, but administration should only be undertaken under strict clinical supervision.

Clearly, mood swings caused by hormone imbalances cannot be divorced from the human condition, especially not for the fairer sex who receives way more than their fair share. While drugs have advanced over the years, the harsh side effects makes one cry out for a safer more organic alternative to turn to.
