Moodiness has been an ever-present part of the human condition since time immemorial. Often used as a global indictment by males on the fairer sex, there are a fair few males who suffer from the condition as well. While it may be present in females in conjunction with their monthly cycle, it is really only a tickling on the surface of an incredibly complex human emotional presentation, which cuts through a myriad of psychological conditions and human activities.

Mood swings are very much part and parcel of the normal human condition. In fact it can often present in a positive light, aiding us to quickly summon and draw upon our innermost resources to tackle or confront particularly pressing tasks. It may well have proved an evolutionary necessity in allowing our species to adapt swiftly to the ever-changing environmental landscape.

When mood swings present to the extreme however, it is a full blown clinical condition known as bipolar disorder. By definition these are mood swings which persist for a period of at least 4 days. At this point there are a number of chemical and behavioral interventions which a clinical psychologist could recommend.

The condition is characterized by periods of extreme melancholy alternated by periods of severe depression. This can be so traumatizing to the sufferer as to completely incapacitate them, making the performance of even mundane tasks completely impossible.

Mood swings are most often caused by an unhealthy lifestyle which is often exacerbated by poor dietary habits. Drug and alcohol consumption are clearly no-go areas for individuals suffering from the disorder. Sometimes hyper-active individuals or those who also suffer from a form of Attention deficit disorder also tend to suffer from mood swings, which are directly related to attention deficit behavior. The most common reason for mild mood swings is the need to adapt to everyday stressors which tends to take its toll, particularly on our adrenal glands amongst others.

In general mood swings can be categorized into two types, the short duration ultradian which lasts for just a few hours and the ultrarapid which can last for days on end. The Neuroscientists have identified two specific neurotransmitters in the brain which appear to play a significant role in our mood swings. They are known as Serotonin and Norepinephrine. A lack of these interventions, the sufferer tends to normalize and become more melancholic.

For the milder more common mood swings simply improving the diet, getting a good night's sleep and adding some exercise into your daily routine can work wonders. There are also a variety of distraction techniques such as reading, television or knitting which prove highly practical for a number of sufferers. Besides the pharmaceutical intervention, psychiatrists may recommend Cognitive Behavior Therapy which involves specific visualization exercises in a therapeutic setting.

What is clear is that no matter what we do, mood swings are very much a part of the human condition and as long as it does not escalate to clinical levels, we should harness its power in our daily lives.
