What Causes Mood Swings

People may wonder if they are going insane if they constantly experience rapid and often seemingly unmerited outbursts of emotion. However, it is no longer a mystery as to what causes mood swings. There are many factors, very few of them actually dangerous, that may drive people to intense emotional states.

Human emotions can be influenced by chemical imbalances in the body. If you are experiencing mood swings, it does not have to mean something is wrong with you. Sometimes it is a natural consequence of something your body is going through, such as your period, pregnancy, or menopause.

Hormones may be what causes causes mood swings. Many hormonal changes are natural and temporary, but sometimes supplements or a change in diet may be necessary. Variations in estrogen and progesterone levels for women are what causes mood swings, while testosterone is the principal hormone for men.

What causes mood swings after an operation or very stressful activity is how it may take time for your body’s chemical response system to normalize. It may also be influenced by certain drugs and substances that you have taken. Sometimes it can be as simple as a lack of sleep. It is however possible that what causes mood swings is a psychological issue. Anxiety can build up stress in the body. When people suddenly burst into anger for little reason, it is a release of a pre-built irritable state. Those who are already primed to accept failure might suddenly feel depressed. It takes very little to trigger the shift in emotional states, sometimes even seemingly unrelated reasons.

Some times it may actually be a physiological issue. It is not just a temporary chemical imbalance, but a severe instability in the body's processes. Depression that lasts for days, sudden unexplainable euphoria, and unexplainable outbursts inappropriate to the situation (such as crying in a happy occasion or suddenly getting angry at a normal conversation) may be signs of a deeper problem. Doctors and psychologists may figure that what causes mood swings is an internal matter and prescribe medication. Brain transmitter chemicals such as dopamine, serotonin and nor epinephrine may be at severe imbalance.

What causes mood swings may be a genetic factor. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorders are inherited traits that can only be relieved, not physically removed. Brain neurophysiology and chemical makeup are also influenced by genes inherited from parents. However this does not mean that a person is incapable of living a normal, productive life. Mood-stabilizing drugs have helped many people.

Aging is also one of the major explanations for what causes mood swings. Very young children tend to exhibit rapid and sudden shifts in mood. As people age, their hormones and mental chemistry levels also change. Adolescence is another point in time when brain and body chemistry's are in flux.

In summary, there are many possible explanations for what causes mood swings. Most reasons are related to issues of lifestyle and health. Some other reasons are physical but can be relieved by medication. What causes mood swings may also be a psychological issue, from anxiety and stress, and tendencies towards aggressive or depressive behavior.
