Break The Procrastination Habit: How To Take Action For Success

To break the procrastination barrier, there are two aspects of the stalling habit or the personal delay tactic to consider.

First, it may be that what you are holding off doing is really not the right thing, or the best thing, for you to be doing right now.

Putting something off is not always UN-wise. There may be a very good reason for delaying an action or a forestalling a decision.

In other words, the timing may actually be wrong, you may need more time for things to “ripen” before acting or deciding.

So sometimes, what we interpret as a “procrastination problem” may actually be a form of wise patience. It just may be that you are beating yourself up by expecting too much of yourself.

So when you come up against resistance, before jumping to the conclusion that you need to stop procrastinating, consider the possibility that you really may be better off focusing on what you CAN DO NOW instead of worrying about what you are not getting to.

If you think of yourself as a procrastinator, you may be subconsciously programming yourself to procrastinate, when procrastination was not really your problem.

Another aspect of the bad habit of just NOT doing it, that can help procrastinators, has to do with understanding how the take-action-process works.

If there is something you want to be doing, but you never seem to get to it, begin by simply thinking about doing it.

Instead of worrying about NOT doing it, evict all negative thinking about yourself from your mind.

Engage in the positive thinking that envisions you taking the action that you want to take.

When you visualize success you are planting a seed in the fertile soil of time.

Each time you revisit your successful visualization, you are feeding the seed of your intention and nurturing it into fruition.

Eventually, your vision of success will grow so powerful through this practice that it will motivate you into taking that action.

Visualize yourself doing it whenever you feel stuck or blocked from doing. See yourself succeeding in your mind and avoid dwelling on ideas of yourself in the postponement trap of habitual procrastinating.

Another way to overcome the self-defeating procrastination problem is to come up with action-steps that you actually can follow through on.

This exercise to end procrastinating is based on the physics laws of momentum and inertia.

How the Law of Momentum applies to the breaking the procrastination habit: Doing any little thing for what you want sets into motion a force of momentum that will lead you to bigger opportunities.

How the Law of Inertia applies to remaining stuck in the self-sabotaging habit of procrastinating: But if you hold off engaging in action through fearful delay, boredom, or any other form of psychological resistance, you strengthen the inertia that holds you back and prevents you from acting.

One important thing to remember is that you can ALWAYS break down an action into smaller action-steps. Taking even the slightest action in line with what you want to accomplish will boost your motivation and get things rolling in the direction of your success.

For instance, if you endlessly put off making an important call, you can break the barrier of procrastination by breaking that action down into smaller steps. For instance:

1. Imagine yourself making the call

2. Pick up the phone and then place it down

3. Take a look at the number you want to call

4. Do a mock-phone call by pretending to have the conversation you are procrastinating

The principle at work here is the Law of Momentum. Trust that anything you do for what you want, however small – even if it is only symbolic, will help the procrastinator make a breakthrough.
