I Am for Sale

Yeah that’s right, in every area of my life I am selling myself. I am for sale.

We cannot do everything ourselves, there always comes a time to enlist the help of other people. In order to realise those dreams and goals, it is important to interact with others and therefore the role of Sales plays a big part in achieving this objective.

Let us think about it for a minute. What exactly is Sales?

Argh run the other way.

Well I know what Sales definitely is not. It’s not the telemarketer who rings up wanting to tell you all about the cheapest internet offer they have at 7pm when the family is sitting down to eat.

It’s not the pushy person with fake enthusiasm that just has to tell us all about the features of….*insert latest gadget name here*

And it is certainly not the cringe worthy attendant forcibly mentioning the add-ons available to the item you are buying, that you obviously have no use for.

Now that’s better!

Sales is all about truly understanding what our customers need and want. This can be done with effective communication involving open and closed questions. Don’t forget to continually paraphrase what you hear back to doubly check and make certain you’ve got the right information.

>>> I think one of the best secrets to being a good sales person is to take the time to genuinely understand the other person's values and key drivers. Once that’s done the whole process becomes a simple matter of matching the right products and services to suit them.

There are some really bad ways people go about selling themselves, sometimes without even realising it. I thought I would point some of them out here to serve as a reminder.

  • Pushing ideas onto others, without respecting their thoughts and opinions
  • Not listening attentively
  • Showing zero interest or care
  • Having no concept of the bad impression being given
  • Not taking responsibility or ignoring requests for service and information

Whatever preconceived ideas you may have about Sales People, the reality is we are all Sales People. And the extent, to which you can apply this craft will be the level of success you can enjoy in each area of your life.

On a daily basis we are interacting with a number of key relationships that all involve selling ourselves to some degree, in order to get things accomplished.

  1. Husband, Wife or Significant Other
  2. Children or Siblings
  3. Work Colleagues and Managers
  4. Business Partners, Stakeholders
  5. Friends, Acquaintances and Strangers
  6. Ourselves

Discover now how this secret sales habit can benefit every area of your life. By understanding and communicating through values you can sell yourself successfully.

Your stories, comments and feedback always welcome.

Very nice title Carmen! You got my mind wandering for a second. But yeah, I totally agree with your point here about selling. I like your phrase that says "to genuinely understand the other person's values..."

Cheers Lemuel. Most things worthwhile tend to be when a connection is made. And I find connecting to people is easier when understanding their values.

My first question was to be "how much, or what price" I thought I could buy you. LOL listen this is a good article an important one to all who read it, A lost art of years ago, you where always selling yourself and being sold to, those practices have been lost to an extent, with the "I want......." instead of the "May I have........." and the other like ways people now communicate with. Love the article C4rmen. (Still trying to work that name out, I'm sure your parents didn't give it to you, and if they did I apologize for my insensitivity.)

I'm also a believer that we're all in sales. As I've said previously, if we're not selling something good to our kids than someone else sure will!
