Norman Schwarzkopf, A Successful General, Died Yesterday

How Did He Become Famous?

Norman Schwarzkopf, His main claim to fame was his role with Operation Desert Storm. His nickname was “Stormin’ Norman” because he reportedly had a bad temper around his aides and subordinates. However, he did not like his nickname. Other people knew him as a friendly man, and his troops referred to him as “The Bear.”

He died in Tampa, Florida at the age of 78 yesterday because he developed complications from having pneumonia. He retired in 1992, and he continued to be active after his retirement. He wrote his autobiography and got involved with charitable organizations.

His Life Before He Became a General

H. Norman Schwarzkopf was born in Trenton, N.J. on August 24, 1934. His father, who is also known as H. Norman Schwarzkopf, led the investigation of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. His father founded and headed the New Jersey State Police. His father later became a brigadier general in the U.S. Army.

The younger Norman Schwarzkopf went to other countries while he was growing up. He went to Iran, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. He earned an engineering degree from West Point, and he received his commission as a second lieutenant in 1956.

In 1966, he volunteered to go to Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He completed two tours there.

His Life as a General

He became a general in 1983, and shortly after becoming a general, he led an invasion of Grenada. However, he became even more famous for his involvement with Operation Desert Storm. The Gulf War, also known as Operation Desert Storm, occurred in 1991. The purpose of that war was to get the Iraqis out of Kuwait. The coalition of troops for Desert Storm came from more than 25 countries, and he led the coalition during the Gulf War.

His Retirement Years

He retired after Operation Desert Storm in 1992, and he wrote a best-selling autobiography. In the book, “It Doesn’t Take a Hero,” he said he was not a hero because he was lucky when leading his troops.

Schwarzkopf gave speeches about prostate cancer awareness and also worked to increase the population of grizzly bears. He was on the Nature Conservancy board of governors and was active in organizations for children with chronic illnesses. He was survived by his wife, Brenda, and his three children: Cynthia, Jessica, and Christian.

Things We Can Learn from Norman Schwarzkopf

Based on what I read, he had high self esteem. He knew he was good at engineering and military strategy. As a leader, I am sure he faced lots of criticism. He stood by his decisions, and that was one of the traits that made him a good leader. He had a lot of courage, and he probably learned that when observing his dad, who was a leader in the New Jersey State Police. He was humble when he said he was lucky to be a successful military leader. He continued to be productive when he retired. That gave him a purpose in life. He spent his retirement years helping spread knowledge about prostate cancer and chronically ill children. Even though he was in the military for many years, he wanted people to remember him as a person who cared about people and animals. I believe he proved that with his charitable activities after he retired from the military.
