Rugby World Cup 2011 - Winning Lessons

The final whistle was blown! The thundering roar of the crowd filled the whole Mt. Eden Stadium. Fans jumping up and down in jubilation, waving the All Blacks flag. The cup is home at last! After 24 years of waiting, the All Blacks was proclaimed the Champion of the Rugby World Cup 2011 beating France by 1 point 8-7. It was a well contested match, both teams gave their all up to the last seconds of the game. The All Blacks emerged victorious and became the Rugby World Cup Champion. The Pride of New Zealand!

Now that the air has been cleared of the euphoria and celebration, the lingering question in my mind is: What winning lessons did we learn from this memorable event? For me, these are the winning lessons I learned from the Rugby World Cup 2011:

1. In life there will always be winners and losers.

The Rugby World Cup opened our eyes to the reality of losing and winning. In the game of life there will always be losers and winners. There will be those who will succeed and those who will fail. However, each and everyone of us is given an even playing field. We all have the opportunity to win. Others will grab the opportunity while others wait or ignore it. It is all up to us.

2. Having a dream and a vision is the first step to success.

"Success is a realization of a worthwhile dream." One becomes successful by design not by default. Having a dream is vital because this will show us the WHY. This will motivate us to action. Why did the All Blacks train so hard? Why did they persevere and stay on the game inspite of the tremendous body battering and tiresome running around the field? This is because they want to be the Rugby World Cup champions. It has been their dream to once more win the Webb Ellis Cup which has eluded them for 24 years. They did not lose sight of this dream even in the dying seconds of the game. They pushed on until the end. And this is what made them Champions.

3. Having a plan of action to achieve the dream is essential.

It is futile to have a dream without a plan of action. It will just be pure wishful thinking and worse, the dream may turn into a nightmare. Have a plan on how to achieve the dreams and goals we set for ourselves. Do you think the All Blacks would have reached the finals and won their games without having a game plan? Definitely not! They followed a strategy that will help them win all their games. In the same way we should have a well thought of strategy on how to go about achieving our goals. This will be our road map to success.

4. We have to take action NOW.

Most of the time we tend to procrastinate. We hesitate and postpone doing something because we are not 100% sure. Over analysis leads to paralysis. The truth is, if we do not take action with the sense of urgency, nothing will happen however brilliant our plan is. When Aaron Cruden was injured in the second half, Graham Henry made a crucial decision to put in Stephen Donald as the substitute. He took that action with the belief that Donald will step up and perform what was expected of him. Donald did step up and kicked that winning goal which crowned them 2011 Rugby World Cup Champions. Had Graham Henry hesitated, we would not know what would have been the outcome of that game. It only takes one decision to succeed.

5. Having a good coach and mentor.

Having a coach and a mentor is very important in our quest for success. We cannot undermine the fact that it will be very difficult to achieve what we want to accomplish without somebody teaching and guiding us. This entails a lot of humility. But this is the only way to grow and improve. Left alone we will be stagnant. The coach or mentor will direct us towards the right direction when we go off course, which is 80% of the time. The All Blacks left alone without a coach will never go that far. Graham Henry has given them the guidance and motivation they much needed. He helped the team focus on the end result - the Webb Ellis Cup. As such winning was inevitable. They came out of the tournament undefeated.

The Rugby World Cup 2011 was a successful and joyful event that we all will remember. It has given us valuable winning lessons in life. Lessons that when applied in our day to day lives will have a significant impact. Lessons that will make us champions.
