Should Ann Curry Leave the National Broadcasting Company?

Introduction

For approximately one year, Ann Curry was the co-host of the Today show on the National Broadcasting Company. She had been working her way up the career ladder before she became co-host of the Today Show. The National Broadcast Company (NBC) demoted her, and NBC has suffered bad publicity as a result of that. Ann Curry officially left the Today Show on June 28, 2012. They put her on “special assignments,” which is usually means the person ends up getting an offer from someone else, or the person leaves the station. Allegedly, she got an offer from the Cable News Network to anchor a prime time TV show. Should Ann Curry Leave the National Broadcasting Company?

Even though she lost her job as a co-host for the Today show, she received $10 million. Her lawyers said she is entitled to leave NBC for another position. They claimed NBC committed a breach of contract when they demoted her. She might have asked NBC to release her from her contract so she could work for CNN.

Ann Curry’s TV Career

Ann Curry graduated from the University of Oregon in 1978, and she became the first female news reporter for KGW in Portland after her graduation. She joined the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) in 1990, and became the anchor for Dateline NBC. She started her position as co-anchor for the Today show in 2011.

Was Her Demotion Justified?

This is a matter of public debate. Some people believed Matt Lauer caused her to be fired from the Today show. However, the move to change to another co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie, did not seem to help the ratings for the Today Show. The ratings kept going downhill. When ratings go down, the TV stations collect less advertising revenue, and sometimes they decide to discontinue shows with low ratings.

One of her assignments turned out very well. After the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, she tweeted about doing 20 mitzvahs or acts of kindness to honor each child lost in Newtown, Connecticut. She asked people to retweet if they agree with her statement. It grew to 26 acts of kindness to include the six adults who died in the Sandy Hook tragedy. She was able to attract many responses to her request, and that is an example of leadership on her part.

Conclusion

Based on the fact Ann Curry has been moving up the career ladder until her recent demotion. I think she deserves a chance to become an anchor at CNN. It will be a chance for her to prove her ability to attract a TV audience for a prime-time TV show. She definitely has leadership ability, because the tweeting campaign for the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting tragedy attracted many responses to her tweet. That situation also shows her familiarity with social networking, and that might also help with show ratings if she becomes an anchor at CNN. This might be a way to allow her to succeed with TV journalism.

Good job writing about a question. You set out the details well. Ahhhhh... politics! Deserving and serving don't always mesh with timing. Over time, though, people get many opportunities to serve. Ann Curry may well turn up in ways that astound those who passed her over - and potentially in ways that support those who passed her over in ways that she and they might never even have imagined in their wildest aspirations. Life is stranger than fiction. Good job!

Thank you, Shawn. Based on the news stories about her, it looks like CNN is the open door for her. I have had times when a door closes, and the other door doesn't seem to open for a long time. I am sure Ann Curry will get another good reporting position with national or international news in the near future.
