Step By Step to Success

My wife and I have a video of our one-year old grand daughter during her first attempts at walking. The smart phone age is a wonderful and perfect medium for capturing these life events. You can watch as she tentatively moves along the coffee table, keeping her legs stiff and supportive.

At first she is merely shuffling her feet in a sliding fashion. When she does lift a foot, it is more of a high leg lift and than it stomp onto the floor. The stuttering steps gives one anxiety and worry that the next step may result if a fall. You want to help but you also want her to learn on her own.

Each Step We Take

The process of learning how to walk is a very basic human function. Once we have learned how to walk, it seems inconceivable how someone could "not" know how to walk. I have read where some say that walking is "controlled falling." If we did not control the learned aspects of walking, we would immediately fall.

A physiologist named Giovanni Cavagna, determined in his research that walking is very much like an inverted pendulum. As you walk, you pivot on the foot which remains on the ground. He likened it to using the leg as a pole-vault. There is also your center of gravity, near your hips, which is the swinging arc of the pendulum.

When you place your foot on the ground, the ground itself exerts a force back up that slows you down and continues to slow you down as you lift off on that foot (the top of the arc). As you "fall" forward with your next step, the process is repeated.

So in essence, our movement forward truly is powered by each step we take. There is no luxury of moving any further then the individual steps we take. If your stride is two feet in length, you will only advance forward a maximum of two feet with each movement. Again, step-by-step.

Trusting In Your Steps

My grand daughter learned that with walking, she could get across the room faster by letting go of the coffee table. In the beginning she walked along the table, to the couch, another end table, until she reached the other side. She was walking, step by step, grasping hold of of anything for security.

Once she learned to trust the steps she was taking, she could more quickly get to a toy by walking directly towards it. By letting go from the safety of hanging onto a table, she trusted her own abilities and she advances more quickly. Does any of this ring a bell in your mind?

We are always looking for short cuts in life. We want the journey to be short and secure. We want to bypass all of the work needed to get to a goal. We want success to be instantaneous and without risk. But we all know it does not come that easy or instantly. It requires taking each of those steps. We have to trust that our steps are true and accurate.

Occassionally you will let go and in the middle of the journey, you will fall. Some people will retreat to the coffee table to hang onto it. But the goal of success still remains on the other side of the room, near the toy box. Others will stand back up and continue the walk. They will shake off the moment, regain their balance and proceed with their walk.

Step By Step

With every thing we do in life, it is going to require us to create movement. We will be required to walk step by step, little ones, big ones, but each with a purpose towards success. There will be times that we feel unsure and may stumble, but we get back up, we move on.

The success in your life is determined by the steps you take. Success is earned in each little or big step we take. One foot, pivoting to the next foot in perfect harmony moving your life forward. You will eventually cross the room and attain what you seek.
