The Danger Of Being Driven By Results

Are you the type of person who likes to enjoy life as it bumps along celebrating small milestones, or are you the sort of person who set lots of goal, is driven by results and focussed on the big achievements? People who are results orientated tend to be very clear about where they’re going, how they’re are going to get there and constantly have that end picture in mind. Now, I’m not about to suggest people shouldn’t have goals that they want to achieve, but there are some dangers to being overly driven by results.

I’m sure you’ve seen people who go after a specific goal, to the exclusion of almost anything else, including perhaps relationships, leisure time, time spent socialising or exercising. Some people also ignore the basics of being healthy and don’t eat or sleep properly. The thing that is most important to them is to complete the task or project successfully, before they move on to the next big thing. They hardly stop to pause over what they have achieved because being driven by results, once they have ticked that box, they move on. Perhaps you even recognise these tendencies in yourself?

If you are that type of person, then it might be time to think about how you could do things differently. The problem with an approach that is driven by results and end goals is that you miss out on opportunities to celebrate different successes as and when they occur and allow other people to celebrate with you. Celebrating successes provides opportunities to take stock and review any changes before you move forward.

If you’re someone who’s driven by results you might have groaned about the prospect of wasting time celebrating small successes, but don’t. There are lots of ways in which you can celebrate in a small way.

1. Talk about it. It’s very important that you don’t keep success to yourself. Tell someone about small successes you have. It might be someone who has had some input into your success, or they might just be someone who can share what’s happened and appreciate your achievements.

2. Take a break. What you do in that break is up to you, but sometimes it’s important to take time out from a task or a project and just enjoy something entirely different. If nothing else you will return to it refreshed.

3. Record your success. Keep some record of your progress. It’s wonderful to have some sort of record, written or pictorial that charts your success and you have as a reference tool for the future.

4. Reward yourself. I believe it’s very important that people reward themselves. If you’re driven by results, you won’t need to use rewards as a mode of motivation, but it’s still important to give yourself some treats as you go along. It may be something quite small just for you, or something larger that you share with one or more people.

None of the ideas mentioned above are big things to do and you don’t have to do them all, but I guarantee that they will have an impact on your health and well being. If you’re naturally driven by results continue to set your goals and drive yourself towards them, but don’t forget to celebrate as well.
