Adhd And Omega 3 Fatty Acids: Does Fish Oil Help To Alleviate The Symptoms Of Adhd?

Most people already know that omega 3 fatty acids are vital substances for human health. After all, doctors, nutritionists and other health experts have been talking about them for several years now, especially in terms of their benefits for cardiovascular health. But what a lot of people still don’t know about this fatty acid is that it can also be an instrumental tool against ADHD, especially among children.

Before you start building sky-high expectations, it must be understood that the link between adhd and omega 3 is still under investigation. However, the future certainly looks bright in this field as scientists have been discovering so many different ways of how omega 3 fatty acids can be used to treat and prevent ADHD in children.

How Does Omega 3 Affect the Brain?

It has been discovered a long time ago that omega 3 fatty acids make up a large portion of the human brain. Thus, this substance plays a critical role in maintaining excellent mental health. The more omega 3 fatty acids you get, the better your mental functions will be and the more protected you will be from mental disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss, schizophrenia and depression. On the contrary, a deficiency in omega 3 fatty acids can alter normal brain functions and lead to the onset of various mental health problems, including ADHD.

How Does Omega 3 Work to Alleviate ADHD?

Omega 3 fatty acids contain DHA and EPA, two very important substances needed by the brain to stay healthy and active. According to the results of several different studies, an increased intake of fish oil supplements that are rich in these fatty acids caused the decrease of symptoms typically associated with ADHD.

One study, for instance, showed dramatic improvements in concentration and memory among the participants who took fish oil capsules on a daily basis. Another study showed a reduced tendency for violence among teenagers in juvenile prison.

Dozens of other studies also showed that a higher consumption of omega 3 fatty acids caused fewer mood swings, longer attention span, and shorter and less intense cases of depression.

Results of Studies on Omega 3 and ADHD in Children

As mentioned, there are no official conclusions when it comes to omega 3 and ADHD in children but the many studies conducted on the subject all look very promising. First of all, it has been found that majority of children diagnosed with this condition do have considerably lower omega 3 levels than the average child without adhd.

After putting these children on a daily dosage of a fish oil supplement for a certain period, the symptoms of the disorder were reduced significantly.

In some of the studies, children who do not have this disease were also given the same dose of fish oil supplements and they, too, showed several improvements in different areas of health. For example, they showed better focus, improved memory, and calmer behavior than before they started taking the supplements.

This indicates that a child need not suffer from ADHD in order to benefit from the use of fish oil supplements and natural omega 3 foods.

An interesting question brought about by these recent studies on omega 3 and ADHD is whether it may be possible to reduce the possibility of a child developing this disease even while he or she is still in the mother’s womb.

During pregnancy, a woman may be able to take fish oil supplements and increase the omega 3 fatty acids for her and her unborn child, thus ensuring that the baby will be protected against this disorder as he or she grows up.

Like many other speculations about ADHD and omega 3 fish oil, this of course remains to be scientifically proven. What we can be sure of today is that omega 3 certainly gives a lot of benefits for human health, be it for mental well-being or otherwise.
