Do You Need To Take Supplements

We are led to believe that there are supplements or magic potions that are going to allow you get the body of your dreams with ease. No more hard work In the gym needed, just take this. For the most part, supplements are not going to help a great deal, in less you really need them.

So why do you hear about them so much? Well that’s the supplement company’s, marketing their products. There shouting from the roof tops, putting advertisements up on the street, sending emails to your inbox with the new magic formula. They want you to buy their product, simple as. They know that if they put a good enough story behind why you need this supplement then you will buy it.

Now I’m not against supplements, I just don’t believe we need them to the extent that we are led to believe. I personally used to consume far more protein than I actually needed to and I believe this was due to being influenced by protein pounder manufactures, again I think protein powder are great in some scenarios.

So what is a supplement and when should you take it? Well the word supplement tells the story. Supplements are for supplementing your diet with the vitamins and minerals that you are lacking in. You should aim to get all the nutrients you need from your diet, if you still need additional then top it up with a supplement or two.

If you are eating a healthy diet that contains adequate proteins, fibrous fruit and vegetables and good fats, then providing the food is of good quality, you should get all the vitamins and minerals that you need.

However there are some implications, due to crop rotation not happening as often as it once did the amount of vitamins and minerals in the soil or grass is nowhere near what it should be. So your fruits and vegetables could just look like vegetables / fruit but not actually contain any nutrients, going organic is the safe option and should ensure good quality.

I’m not saying you do and I’m not saying you don’t need supplements as we are all different. However I fully believe that we can get almost all the nutrients if not all from our diet.

I recommend certain supplements to my personal training clients, but only what I feel could offer them a real benefit.

If I have a client that seems stressed, then I would usually recommend to get some herbal teas and some magnesium. If I train a lady who seems to be estrogen dominant then I would recommend an anti estrogenic diet and possibly a supplement for helping reduce the hormonal imbalance. But to be honest that’s about it apart from protein powder for clients who lead an exceptionally busy life and struggle to fit proper food in.
