G’day All.
Today’s topic was inspired by a student I am teaching earth-moving operations to and the fact that we all should live life to the fullest because we never know when our time will run out. This thought occurred to me in particular because as a teacher of trade like skills (truck driving, traffic control, forklift, and earth moving, ect) I deal with a wide range of students all doing these courses for different reasons. Some people will need a particular skill to advance their position at their current employment; some will get a licence to further their own skills or to make them more employable in other jobs they have an interest in, or maybe even trying something new because they always wanted to do it but never have. However the students that annoy me most are the students I see who really have no interest or motivation to do the course they have either been sent to do the course because “the boss wants me to have a truck licence, not me” or the ones who are sent mainly so that they can keep their employment benefits.
I will teach anyone who wants to learn!
Now have no misconceptions here I love teaching and helping people achieve their goals or attain new skills when they want to learn, however when students or people in general put no effort into the course they are attending or play the “sympathy card” because they think they should just “get it” because they have had a hard time in life or because they have paid a fee, I get little annoyed to say the least. Effort equals results!
People understand that life will only throw you so many opportunities to try new things or get ahead in life and if you continually knock them back eventually you will be stuck in a rut you can’t get out of. Yes it’s scary to take the plunge into something you are unfamiliar with but if you don’t take that plunge you will always find yourself asking later “what if I had done that” or “I could have done that but I didn’t”. Don’t leave your life with regrets! Do your research, ask questions (lots of questions) have a plan but never be afraid to try!
God helps those who help themselves!
Motivation and circumstance can lead people to achieving great things through all the odds stacked up against them even though they may have little money, time, skill, literacy, physical setbacks or even mental illness or any number of reasons. But does all of that even matter if you don’t let anything stand in your way of achieving what you want to achieve and just go and get it!
Now motivation and circumstance will go so far to reaching for those goals, but sometimes that is not enough, sometimes we need a little something extra, it could be the help of a professional in that chosen field to show you the way, it could be getting the initial finance together to start with, it could be finding a way around a physical barrier of some sought to keep moving ahead. These are things that can be overcome and they are only a stumbling block out their to slow you down if you let them. Successful people will find a way to remove these stumbling blocks and continue to move forward. It's far better to find a solution to a problem rather than an excuse as to why the problem cannot be solved!
Don't be afraid to ask for help and listen to advice!
Sometimes this is the hardest part when you are trying to achieve something new in your life. Asking for help and taking advice. Sometimes we are stubborn creatures us humans but that is exactly why we should seek guidance from time to time. Sometimes we want a little more than a hand we want “someone else to do it for us” however this is a false hope. Ever heard of the saying “catch a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and he feeds himself for life!” I love that quote! If you ask for help let someone help but remember to learn and listen so that you can prosper and achieve your goals.
Satisfaction from taking on the new!
When my wife and I started our business importing dietary supplements from Hungary into Australia we were the first to do so for our parent company flavon. However we had no skills in this area, we only just had enough money to have a crack at it and it was totally foreign to us and we heard from our friends and family “are you sure you should do this?” or “what if it fails” or “isn’t it a bit of a risk”. My answer to all these questions and a lot more was YES, YES, YES! They were right we were not sure if we should do this, it could definitely fail and yes it is totally a risk. But the optimist in us said “let’s try this”, "it could be a risk worth taking" and "what if it works out". If we had answered "your right" to the above mentioned questions no risk would have been taken, we would never had tried this business and we would positively know that it has failed because it was never started with to begin with.
Something I heard the other day and it could be a quote by someone of great importance however I don’t know who it was. “Something never started has already failed”.
You never know unless you give it a go, don’t be afraid of failure because failure can lead to great achievements’ and live your life because you only get one of them.
Time may pass and you may have decided to stay in your ”comfort zone” and not try to improve your situation or just keep doing the things you usually do and that is fine. To me I believe a greater satisfaction from life comes from when you push yourself through and try and improve your situation daily and learn as much as you can along the way.
Learn to fish and you may learn how to feed your whole town!
