Natural Anti  -  Inflammatories And Pain Relievers

What are natural anti-inflammatories and pain relievers? Patients ask me this all the time. The most proven, natural anti-inflammatories and pain relievers are natural agents like curcumin – which comes from the spice, turmeric – as well as white willow bark extract, ginger and boswellia.

But how do these natural anti-inflammatories work? They work very much the same way as aspirin and ibuprofen work; they block the conversion of certain fats into what are called prostaglandins and hormones. Prostaglandins are very inflammatory hormones that are made by our own tissues, and when their synthesis is blocked, your body can reduce inflammation. This is how aspirin and ibuprofen work; they block enzymes known as cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase.

There are natural compounds that can do this same thing. Although medicinal anti-inflammatories like aspirin, ibuprofen, indomethacin and Voltaren (diclofenac) block inflammatory prostaglandins, there are some side-effects – erosion to the intestinal tract (leading to ulcerations and internal bleeding, which is not uncommon); liver and kidney damage; heart failure and cardiovascular death and even high blood pressure can result when taking these drugs.

I am not overstating this when I say that long-term use of these anti-inflammatory drugs has been known to have side-effects like this and that it’s becoming a major concern across the healthcare community. Drugs like acetaminophen are strongly related to liver and kidney failure when taken even at normal doses after a prolonged period of time.

The issue isn’t that these drugs don’t belong – they do – however, you should try and lower and even reduce your reliance on these synthetic anti-inflammatory pain relievers. In addition, narcotics to include codeine, Percodan, Percocet and even the stronger drugs, like Oxycodone, should be lowered and reduced whenever possible.

When using natural herbal and accessory nutrients for anti-inflammation purposes – supplements that are much less toxic – you will want to follow the proper dosage. Here are some guidelines to follow:

Curcumin – You want a supplement that also contains turmeric which is a 95 percent standardized grade of curcumin. You’ll need about 600 to 1200 ml. per dosage to really get the anti-inflammatory effect over the course of the day.

Boswellia – You need a standardized grade of 70 percent boswellic acid. And again, you’ll need about 600 to 1200 ml. over the course of the day to really get an anti-inflammatory effect.

White Willow Bark Extract – You need a standardized grade of 15 percent salicin, or salicylic acid. And you’ll need about 100 to 200 mg. a day from that source.

Ginger – Even though we know that eating ginger is great, to get an anti-inflammatory effect it has to be a standardized grade of 5 percent ginerols, and you’re going to need 150 to 300 mg. a day to make that happen.

I like to use a supplement where all these things have been combined into one capsule. You might take say, 3 to 6 capsules a day to get the curcumin, boswellia, white willow bark extract and ginger all in one. Together, they can block the cyclooxygenase and the lipoxygenase enzymes that lead to inflammation and you’ll get a sort of nice, natural anti-inflammatory effect. Are there other anti-inflammatories? Yes, the flavionoid quercetin works very well, and bromelain enzymes work very well, too.

Those anti-inflammatories are really good for certain conditions, like tendonitis and bursitis, when you have a muscle strain or muscle inflammatory problem. Even for spinal disc herniations they can reduce the inflammation significantly. They helped me personally at one point. For lower back strains or whiplash injuries, they can be used in place of anti-inflammatory drugs to decrease your reliance or how much of the anti-inflammatory drugs you’re going to need.

Why am I brining this to your attention? I’m bringing it to your attention because many family doctors, rheumatologists and orthopedic surgeons fail to mention to patients the importance of diet, exercise and supplements in the management of these cases. It’s very unfortunate and disappointing, because these natural remedies can make a really big difference in your care, and you can decrease your reliance on drugs that could lead to significant side-effects and toxins, and sometimes even dependency.
