Recommended Daily Allowance Of Vitamin C

When I read on one of my vitamin bottles it tells me that if I take 500 milligrams of Vitamin C (one pill) that it will supply 833% of what is needed for good health. It tells me to take one pill each day and that it will support healthy immune functions, is an antioxidant, and that it promotes healthy skin, bones, cartilage and blood vessels.

A well-known disease caused by a deficiency or lack of vitamin C is scurvy. Scurvy in sailors is well known. The disease effects all parts of the body starting with the gums and teeth and then moving on to the circulatory system where wounds refuse to heal and old wounds open up. It affects all those areas in which it promotes good health and may move to the nervous system. Sick and weary sailors suffered horribly until a source of vitamin C could be found. Ships often carried lemons or other citrus to prevent scurvy.

Dr. Linus Pauling who died in 1993 at the age of 93 was an advocate of using large amounts of vitamin C to prevent or remove the symptoms of influenza and colds. He also recommended the use of vitamin C combined with lysine to prevent buildup in arteries. Vitamin C can be tolerated in high amounts by adults and it takes large amounts to fight the symptoms of flu and colds. I take about 4000 milligrams if I get cold symptoms. If they don't go away in about 12 hours, I take a similar dose. However, some people like pregnant women and children should take no more vitamin C than recommended by their physician.

We have several doctors in our family but my son who is a veterinarian says that vitamin C is now being given intravenously to cancer patients with some remarkable cures. I would think that it would be effective in treating viral cancers. The Mayo Clinic says that taking vitamin C orally is not the answer to treating cancer and that intravenous treatments are still being evaluated. Well, I say, It can't hurt!

One nice thing about vitamin C is that the body knows how to use it to prevent and cure disease but it also knows how to get rid of excessive amounts of vitamin C. It passes through the body and is eliminated in the usual ways especially in urine.
