Saw Palm Health Benefits

In 1988 I had an accident that nearly killed me. I fell from a scaffold I was working on; and broke bones in both legs. To add “insult to injury” the pain in my legs had caused me to not be able to pass urine properly so I had to have a catheter put in. The result of this after a few days was a raging infection.

The reason I share this story with you is to introduce what became a long battle with prostate health. I am not sure what caused the problem but from that point in 1988 on, I continually fought with urinary tract infections and problems passing my urine. I had to constantly be careful about how much caffeine I drank. I had to make sure I didn’t get myself into situations where I would need to hold my urine for long periods of time. Traveling was miserable as I had to stop very frequently. On and on I could go. If you have an enlarged prostate or what is referred to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), you know exactly what I’m talking about. This is that slight enlargement of the prostate that does not allow you to completely drain your bladder.

The infections caused me to need antibiotics several times a year. My libido was at an all-time low. I was miserable, often having painful urination. I was tested for prostate cancer but was cleared of that for now, but my doctor warned it could turn into cancer.

Then out of the blue my wife mentioned my problem to her male gynecologist. He suggested that I try a saw palmetto extract supplement. The doctor told my wife it was a way to deal with my prostate problems with natural herbs instead of antibiotics. He added that he had taken them for years and would not be with out it. So I tried it.

There have been some independent surveys that have shown there is a lot of “junk” on the market. Remember that supplements are not regulated like pharmaceuticals are and some companies use fillers. Also saw palmetto tea has not shown to be effective, as the phytochemicals that produce health improving results are fatty acids and not generally water soluble.

There are several things that should be checked before you start to take saw palmetto as a supplement. You want to make sure your problem is not prostate cancer. So you need to be tested and examined for that prior to trying it. Second; herbal supplements can interfere with certain medications and interact with other supplements or medications. Blood-thinners may interact Saw palmetto which may affect the blood's ability to clot, and could interfere with blood-thinning drugs, including: Coumadin, and Plavix.

Saw Palm can also interfere with oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy as it can have an effect on hormones, both estrogen and testosterone. Therefore it is a good idea to discuss these things with your physician before you try saw palmetto therapy if you are already taking a hormone therapy of any kind.

Saw palmetto has been mostly promoted for men but there have been some benefits for women as well. For urinary tract health, and has been used to treat women with severe menstrual cramps. It has been known to help regulate estrogen levels, and thus has been used to treat excessive facial hair, and sex drive problems.

For men, the benefits are many. If you know you don’t have prostate cancer, and you are not taking drugs that might interact with the supplement. Saw palm can help relieve an enlarged prostate, and improve urine flow. This helps with frequent urination and urgent sensations. Night time urination and all that goes with an enlarged prostate.

There is some evidence that saw palmetto may help with hair loss. Saw palmetto hair regrowth has not been proven. There have been several promising studies but they used small groups of men and more work needs to be done.

I have seen some work done with body builders that use it to boost their testosterone levels. The hormone boost and other benefits also help your libido and can help you put passion back in your relationship without use of artificial drugs like Cialis or Viagra.

There have seen several studies that have concluded that there were no benefits from saw palmetto extract when compared to a placebo. Well, I really do not know what the problem is with those studies. Some have suggested that the blinding was not done correctly; some have suggested that the time frame was too short. Some would say the drug companies funded them and that they are trying to keep competition off the market. I can tell you that it has worked for me, I wouldn’t be without it. The doctor that recommended natural herb therapy to me said he had good results with it. Native Americans have used it for hundreds of years to treat urinary problems, and sexually related problems. They also used it as an antiseptic, and an expectorant for breathing problems. This is the therapy of choice for prostrate and urinary problems in Europe. So why these studies have had problems proving its effectiveness is a mystery to me.

You want to make sure that you purchase your supplements from a reputable supplier. Natural herbs are not regulated as well as drugs, so you need to do some research. If possible check with someone that is already taking them to get a recommendation.

Side effects of saw palmetto are generally rare and not too severe. The most common side effect seems to be mild stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and sometimes some breast pain or enlargement.

In conclusion the benefits make this supplement well worth a try either for treatment or prevention of urinary problems. Especially if you are man over 40, and the benefits seem to be even more significant with men over 60.

Some natural cures are better than medication. People swear by saw Palmetto. To be honest I didn't really know what the stuff was until a few years ago. As far as studies go, it's best to check more than a few. Think of how much the drug companies lose when something simpler comes along.
