Sports Nutrition And Supplements

There is little doubt that proper supplementation when it comes to sports and athletic pursuits is vital for the athlete to perform at their peak. The research and development that is devoted to supplements nowadays beggars belief, and it is a common situation for teams of product development professionals employed by supplement companies to conduct or browse research to find the latest and greatest performance enhancing supplements. In many instances, only a few percent of difference can be absolutely key for an athlete. Supplement companies such as Muscletech, Gaspari and MusclePharm are well known in the athletic world, as they sponsor numerous famous athletes. Supplements and sports certainly go hand-in-hand.

It is important to discuss what sorts of supplements can benefit the athlete, and which supplements are correct for which type of athlete. After all, endurance and strength athletes have completely different neurological and muscular systems in place due to years of training and performing, and as such they need to be treated separately with nutrition and supplementation.

Firstly, the strength athlete. It is the strength athlete’s job to perform athletic tasks that are fast and explosive. These often involve lifting, jumping, throwing and sprinting, all of which require instant power output. It is for this reason that nutrition for a strength athlete needs to ‘prime’ that athlete to produce maximal power output for a short duration of time. Some examples of strength athletes would be sprinters, weight lifters and bodybuilders. Sports nutrition that would be of benefit to the strength athlete would include creatine, pre-workout supplements and amino acids. Creatine is known as an ATP enhancer – it is responsible for promoting power output, volumising muscle cells. Pre-workout supplements, especially those containing caffeine, are perfect for anyone undertaking a short and intense strength endeavour due to the increase physical abilities is provides, while amino acid supplements will help muscles recover from the intensity of training, and protect muscle from breaking down. A combination of these supplements will see power athletes perform at their peak.

For endurance athletes, they need to be energised for long periods of time. Their muscles are under continual stress, albeit less intense than strength athletes. Beta-alanine is a key sports nutrition supplement for the endurance athlete, due to the lactic acid buffer it provides. This will help delay muscle fatigue. In addition, citrulline, or other arginine precursors will improve the bloodflow to muscles and as such help remove the waste product built up during exertion. Amino acids are also vital in maintain muscle and recovery for the endurance athlete. A combination of these supplements will see endurance athletes perform at their peak.

There is little doubt athletes can benefit from ideal sports supplements and nutrition. The question that remains is why don’t all athletes try and benefit with this legal, effective edge?
