Supplements That Can Benefit Your Heart

If your doctor has told you that you are at risk of suffering heart disease or even a heart attack because of heredity, overweight or high cholesterol then you will doubtless be considering ways of reducing that risk. Your doctor will no doubt have told you to give up smoking, to either lose or watch your weight, change your diet and in particular your intake of saturated fats. He may even have prescribed statins to lower your cholesterol but has he suggested that you take supplements that benefit your heart?

There are many dietary supplements that benefit your heart and many of them have other benefits too.

Omega 3 fatty acids which occur naturally in oily fish can reduce triglycerides and increase HDL (good) cholesterol. Omega 3 has anti-inflammatory properties too which can prevent the onset not only of heart disease by Alzheimer's too. If you don't eat sufficient oily fish then a fish oil supplement will be of benefit and the combination of fish oil and magnesium can decrease blood pressure and equalise heart rhythms.

Plant sterols, which can be found in margarines as well as other foods, lower LDL (bad) cholesterol by blocking its absorption into the bloodstream and, working hand in hand with statins can lower LDL by 20 percent.

Another of the supplements that benefit your heart is Vitamin B3, otherwise known as niacin, which is known to raise HDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides.

Coenzyme Q10 is produced from food in the human body and is vital for the production of energy in cells. However, as we get older its production slows down so taking a supplement is a good idea. It is an antioxidant and increases muscle function in the heart, lowering the risk of heart disease. In fact, Coenzyme Q10 promotes all round cardiovascular health and improved metabolism.

Hawthorne is another powerful antioxidant and it too can increase muscle function in the heart as well as relaxing blood vessels, thus improving the flow of blood.

Scientists have found quite recently that Cayenne pepper is great for the heart. It provides nourishment, removes arterial plaque and improves circulation, all of which make the heart function more effectively. It is doubtful that you could eat sufficient Cayenne pepper as part of a healthy diet so a supplement is the obvious answer.

As you can see, there are many supplements that benefit your heart but some of them do the same things and others may not interact well with your normal medication so consult your doctor before embarking on any course of dietary supplements.
