Types Of Fatty Acids That Are Essential For Good Health

The human body requires a variety of different fats so that it can function properly. Many of these fats can be produced by the body itself. There are however, two different types of fatty acids that are essential because the body cannot produce and therefore must come from the food that you eat.

These fats are the omega-3 and omega-6 type and these provide many different health benefits.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

When it comes to the different types of fatty acids, omega-3 provides the most health benefits. It is required for the continual development of the brain and is also required for retina health and maintenance of vision. Some of the other benefits include the following:

  • Can help lower unhealthy cholesterol
  • Can help reduce plaque that has build up on artery walls
  • Helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease including strokes
  • Helps maintain weight
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Helps promote healthy skin and hair
  • Promotes reproductive health
  • Promotes a healthy heart
  • Slows down the aging process

This fatty acid is also responsible for many of the main functions of the human body!

Omega-6 Fatty Acids

This type of fatty acid is also essential for optimal health. It plays a major role in cerebral cortex operations and also looks after reproductive health. Some of the other benefits of these types of fatty acids include:

  • Maintenance of the bones
  • Promotes healthy skin and hair
  • Promotes healthy veins and arteries
  • Promotes a healthy immune system
  • Aids the body’s inflammatory response following injury

Sources Of Omega-3 And Omega-6

Omega-3 is mainly found in fish oil and certain plants and nuts. When it is sourced from fish oil it contains DHA and EPA and these are what provide the health benefits. Plant and nut based omega-3’s are still healthy but less so than those obtained from fish. This is because they do not contain the DHA and EPA that is essential for brain and heart health.

If fish is not a regular item on your shopping list, then you can source quality fish oil supplements that can provide all the health benefits.

Omega-6 is found include vegetable oil and sunflower oil, soy beans and certain cheeses and dairy products.

You can also get supplements containing omega-6, but these are not as popular as omega-3 supplements. In fact, the typical American diet is high in omega-6 while low in omega-3. Therefore supplementing with omega-6 may not be necessary.

Essential Fatty Acids vs. Bad Fats

Saturated fats and trans fats are known as bad fats. These are what contribute to increased cholesterol levels and the build up of plaque in the arteries. Too much of these fats throughout your life can lead to heart disease. These fats are solid at room temperature and are found in cheese, shortening, margarine and animal meats.

The essential types of fatty acids actually do the opposite and need to be an important part of your everyday diet!

Taking supplements is the best way to ensure regular consumption of essential fatty acids and the most popular is fish oil supplements.
