Vitamin D Deficiency

The word vitamin D is everywhere, no matter who you speak to, it's on everyone's mind right now and rightly so. There is mounting evidence that so many of our health issues today, be they modern diseases or syndromes are linked to a vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D is actually a hormone that is connected to every single cell in our bodies. Over 75 diseases and syndromes and counting, are now being linked to a vitamin D deficiency, listed are but a few:

  • Rickets
  • Autism
  • Diabetes
  • Lupus
  • Psoriasis
  • Depression
  • Arthritis/Fibromyalgia
  • Crohn's disease
  • Asthma
  • Alzheimer's/Schizophrenia
  • Dementia
  • Infertility
  • Migraines
  • Osteoporosis
  • Cancer
  • Breast Cancer

This list is endless and most alarming.

In a recent article published in the Guardian it was reported that multiple sclerosis (MS) is on the increase in Scotland and countries who do not get enough sun. In another article a young couple were cleared of killing their son after doctors failed to diagnose rickets.

It's not only the countries that get very little sun that there is a problem, there is major concern for those living in the Middle Eastern countries. They cover up with clothing and suntan lotions. The darker the skin tone the more sun exposure and supplementation is needed as it takes so much longer for the sun to penetrate.

What to look out for:

Please make sure that the vitamin D that you take is vitamin D ONLY and does not come mixed with anything else such as vitamin A which taken in large amounts can become rather toxic and calcium. Too much calcium has been known to cause depression and heart disease. If one uses progesterone and takes the correct amount of vitamin D, this will help the body to absorb all the calcium that we need from our food. To my mind there is no need to take extra unless you have a chronic problem! Make sure that when you have a Vitamin D test done to insist it is D3 that they are testing and not D2. We get enough D2 in the food that we eat.

Is too much too harmful? The answer is no! Once would have to take huge amounts before it did. the preferred level should be between 50-100ng/ml or 125-250nmol/L. I had my level tested recently and it sits at 139ng/ml and I would like to maintain it at that level.

Sun exposure is not enough! However, if you sat in the sun EVERYDAY for 15-20 minutes with nothing on, no clothing or suntan lotions your level would definitely rise. Supplementation is the only way.

If in doubt, the best place to confirm all your questions and concerns would be the Vitamin D Council.
