Vitamin E is another fat soluble vitamin. It has compounds in it known as tocopherols. From what I have read I don't think that the function of Vitamin E has been well established.

Vitamin E is a known antioxidant. Good food sources for Vitamin E are broccoli, carrots and tomatoes. I never fully understood antioxidants well until I did some research, and I won't get into antioxidants at this time, but, will devote an article on this at a later time.

Vitamin E protects substances such as polyunsaturated fatty acids and Vitamin A. It helps to support cell, tissue and muscle. Vitamin E also helps to eliminate fibrocystic breast disease, which can also be hereditary.

I have a friend who had fibrocystic breast disease, and so did her mother. She was going to a holistic M.D. at this time and was in some pain with this diagnosis. This is not cancer, but, can become cancerous, so every 6 month checkups were advised. Her doctor prescribed 800 mg of Vitamin E every day. She did this for about 3 months and started to develop headaches so her doctor told her to decrease her Vitamin E to 600 mg. as headaches can be a side effect of Vitamin E. She reported that after a few days her headaches went away, and so did the pain. After a year on Vitamin E her mammogram could find no cysts. This was about 15 years ago and she has had no further problems. If you have fibrocystic breast disease, speak with your doctor in regards to Vitamin E therapy, and hopefully he will be open to trying this therapy, then follow his instructions.

My family and I were seeing a Holistic M.D. about this time and he explained to me that doctors have little education in diet, vitamins and supplements during their many years of training. He explained also that Holistic M.D.s have to study many more years in the area of vitamin, supplements, diets and remedies, and that is a whole different ballgame for physicians. I learned a lot from this doctor and appreciated the time he took to teach me a new twist on medicine, Holistic medicine VS traditional medicine.

People who have malabsorption problems will often develop Vitamin E deficiency as well as Vitamin A and D.

Good food sources of Vitamin E would be dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds,whole grains, enriched cereals, wheat germ, safflower, vegetable oils, sea foods, poultry, and eggs.

You can be at risk for toxicity, however overdose symptoms are rare. About the only side effect of overdose might be excessive bleeding problems if you injure yourself, because Vitamin E tends to interfere with the body's supply of Vitamin K.
