Whole Food Supplements Vs Isolated Vitamins And Minerals

Most supplement companies today supply vitamins and minerals which have been isolated from their source, but is it actually better for you to consume a whole food supplement straight from the source?

However, if your diet is complete you should not need to use supplementation at all, and if you do use supplementation it is best if you consume a supplement which contains the whole plant, not just one which contains an isolated vitamin or mineral, here’s why;

“If we rely on synthetic vitamins, we miss out on all the other important compounds contained in natural foods.” [1]

Susan Taylor Mayne, a professor at the Yale School of Public Health says that it is generally best to get your vitamins naturally from foods. The vegetables and herbs you eat have been consumed by our ancestors for thousands of years so the body is genetically used to digesting them. In their synthetic, isolated form, they are somewhat foreign to the body.

Isolated vitamins and minerals also cause your body to be thrown off in its nutritional balance and increases the likelihood of nutrient competition. Nutrient competition means nutrients battle for absorption and some potentially essential nutrients may miss out on absorption if you overcrowd with a single vitamin or mineral.

Sometimes, some vitamins or minerals are necessary for the correct absorption of other vitamins or minerals. For example, Vitamin C greatly enhances the absorption of Iron, whereas Vitamin D improves Calcium uptake. This balance is almost impossible to attain through isolated vitamins and minerals, but nature has packed all the nutrients in a fine balance in her plants, so there is no need to worry if you take an all natural, herbal supplement.

Vitamins which are found in their natural form come with thousands of other phytochemicals or plant nutrients which are not essential to normal functioning but may protect against diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimers and others. The combined effect of all these vitamins and phytochemicals seem to have much greater power than one nutrient alone.

With whole foods and their concentrates containing complete nutritional complexes, the body is able to recognise these foods, easily assimilating what it needs and excreting what it doesn’t.

So if you are considering supplementation, opt for an all natural, herbal supplement and receive all the benefits that nature intends for you to receive.
