Surfing Lesson In Maui - Learn How to Surf In Beautiful Hawaii

Heading to Maui on vacation and looking to make a surfing lesson or two one of your adventures? Awesome stuff!

Surfing can be a fun adventure for the whole family and can lead to great exercise and a great "water" experiecne for everyone. I am going to explain what you need to look for in an instructor, explain the best places to get a surfing lesson in maui, and run over some tips that will help you become a better surfer.

Best places to surf in Maui

Maui is known for surfing. Not only that, this Hawaiian Island is one of the most beautiful places in the world and attracts millions of tourists each and every year. The range of surf (beginner to advanced) you will find within Maui is excellent, because regardless of your level of experience, there is a wave for you.

The surf season in Maui varies. In the hotter summer months, Maui gets a southern swell, so the west coast of the along typically gets the largest break. The following areas are good during the summer months because of this weather pattern:

  • Lahaina
  • Launiopoko
  • Pali highway beach area
  • Maalaea
  • Cove Park

In the winter months, the famous "north shore" is the place to be. These include:

  • Honolua Bay
  • S-turn in the Kahana area
  • Hookipa
  • Paia

These are the hot spots to go, so depending on when you are making your way to Maui, you should choose according to your plans.

How to find a place that gives lessons

A typical lesson for surfing will cost you arouned $60 per 2 hour session (group) or $100 per 1-2 hour session (private). Both can be very effective ways to learn the fundamentals from a certified pro, so depending on your budget, they will both be excellent choices.

If you are a beginner (which you most likely are if you are reading this), the good beginner-style waves can be found in the Lahaina breakwall, Launiopoko Park, and Cove park. All of those are excellent places to get your first surfing lesson in Maui!

Important things you need to know about surfing!

Surfing is not a walk in the park. Don't expect to be jumping up on your board and riding waves like a pro you first time out there. It can take some time and it can take some physical training to really get up. It is a very good workout and if you are out of shape, you are going to figure this out right away when you try to pull yourself up.

Paddle boarding can also be a fun alternative to surfing, depending on your shape. You may want to consider some training in advance if you are planning a vacation and planning on surfing lessons during that vacation. It can make your experience that much more enjoyable and far less frustrating.

How hard is it really?

Just makes me wanna try surfing! Only thing is, I've heard of some people--even seasoned surfers really messing up their backs in the process. Did your instructor offer you any tips on how to maintain your spinal health while riding the waves?
