The Stand Up Paddle Revolution And Why It\'s Already The Next Big Thing

Stand up paddle surfing, as it is generally referred to, was rediscovered in recent years by legendary surfer and extreme sports aficionado Laird Hamilton. The sport was believed to have originated from ancient Hawaiians for a means of fishing and play. However , the sport has evolved greatly since the early Hawaiian periods of heavy wooden boards.

Stand up paddle boards have been modified to become extremely light, buoyant and durable. The boards are not the same as traditional surf boards in that they differ in both size and shape. The boards are usually very wide ranging in width from 31 to 33 inches and are anywhere from 6 to 14 feet long giving you tremendous stability.

Standup paddle surfing also has some very unique advantages over traditional surfing which has been known to cause some static amongst the hard core surfers. For instance Stand up paddlers can catch way more waves than a traditional surfer because the paddle acts like a human powered motor. They can also go a lot further out in the ocean to catch reef breaks without the aid of a jet ski.

Stand up paddle boards are very versatile with uses ranging from surf, flat-water, rivers, even fishing and whitewater. This sport is constantly changing and evolving while attracting new enthusiasts in masses.

It's great for all ages and backgrounds. A child as young as 3 or 4 can be taught to paddle in one day. Adults pick up on it fast, usually with a half hour to one hour lesson they can be off paddling and having fun. Most people that try it go out and buy a board right away and make a huge part of their lifestyle.

The Stand up paddle community has also adopted it as a popular fitness activity. Stand up Yoga classes are popping up everywhere as well as boot camps and races. It is truly a fun full body working which burns a ton of calories while really working your core and teaching you balance at the same time.

If you want to have fun while getting exercise and meeting really great people along the way, then stand up paddle boarding is the way to go. It seems everyone involved in the sport has such a passion and drive to have fun make sure everyone else around them is having just as much fun. It has really been bringing family and friends closer together .
