2012 - Three Things People Are Worried About

The year 2012 means a lot of things to a lot of people. Whether you fear the annihilation of the world due to the Mayan calendar or "just" a major economic collapse, you are in good company if you have decided that a little preparation for "come-what-may" is in order.

So what do you prepare for? What are some of the disasters that people think might befall us in 2012? The following are three of the events that people fear (we'll forget about zombies and aliens invading from another galaxy).

Power Grid Failure Due to Solar Flares

The talk is that the solar flare activity is going to be especially strong in 2012, according to the natural cycle of the sun. Word is that the power grid is very susceptible to the electro-magnetic pulses that we will experience and the likelihood is very good that our aged electrical grid will be shut down by this energy.

Yes, NASA has confirmed that we will experience a lot of solar flares in 2012. However, the sun's normal cycle is about 11 years and, according to the NASA website, they are not expecting anything out of the ordinary. It would seem that we have more to fear from the aged grid being overloaded due to a hot summer than the sun. Still, it is always a good idea to be prepared for power outages.

Economic Collapse

The collapse of the US Dollar is a much more likely event for 2012 than the end of the world due to some Mayan calendar prediction. The national debt is now over $15 trillion, which is equal to the Gross Domestic Product for an entire year, and forty cents of every dollar the government spends is borrowed.

If you add in to the equation the amount of money that is due to be paid out in Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid, then the situation is basic bankruptcy.

Hyperinflation

Following a major economic event, the chances for hyperinflation are greatly increased. The best and most well known case of Hyperinflation was probably what happened in Germany before World War 2. The German currency was devalued so bad that people literally needed a wheelbarrow full of cash to buy a loaf of bread.

The same thing happened in Zimbabwe in 2008, which caused them to actually print $100 Trillion bills, as the country suffered an inflation rate of 10 million percent. The government literally could not print money fast enough and soon Zimbabwe's dollar collapsed.

Considering what we've already seen with the national debt and the budget deficit, the concern that something similar could happen in the US is well founded.

Even with a best case scenario, we have a lot of challenges to look forward to in 2012. Thus, it is easy to see why there are a number of urban survival manuals being published in order to teach practical urban survival techniques for people to successfully navigate the the rocky road ahead.
