Do you ever wonder what you would do in the instance of a home invasion? Our home is supposed to be our little safe haven in this dangerous world, but criminals are even trying to take that from us! Home invasions are becoming an ever increasing problem in the United States of America. The stories of these terrible criminal acts are appearing more and more in the news and striking fear in the hearts of families all over the country. What exactly is a home invasion? The Wikipedia definition of a home invasion is “the act of illegally burgling or entering a private and occupied dwelling for the purpose of committing a crime (such as robbery, assault, rape or murder), or any violation of the law against the occupant(s).” What I want to do is give you a few tips to help protect yourself from one of these invasions.
Most home invasions take place because of a homeowner doing something as simple and innocent as opening their front door. The intruder could pretend to be someone in need, a police office, or even someone delivering a package. Other ways these criminals hope to get you to open the door is by claiming that you have won a contest or by claiming that they are checking for gas leaks or problems with your cable. An easy way to get by this last method is by just using common sense before opening the door. Your cable box and gas pipes are located outside and there would be no need for someone checking for these things to come in to your residence.
Other measures that you can take are asking for delivery drivers to just leave your packages at your door. Be cautious especially when you are not expecting a package and always take a peep out your window and if you do not see a well-known delivery service vehicle ( for example: UPS truck or Fed-Ex truck) then DO NOT open the door. If you must sign for something you can politely ask them to wait and then call their company to verify that you are indeed receiving a package. If the company tells you that you are not receiving a package from them, call the police immediately.
One the simplest ways to keep yourself safe is by installing a peephole. Delivery drivers and repairmen are all required to wear photo identification. They are also required to show these to you if you ask them to present identification. When in doubt just ask; it could safe you from much strife.
These are some very easy tips that you can follow to help protect yourself from home invasion. But by no means is this all that you can do to defend yourself from these unexpected attacks! The information that I have just given you is only the tip of the iceberg. I hope you will not take this advice lightly and will actually implement these techniques into your daily life!
