Runic Tattoos - Reality Or Mystery
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Runes, an ancient Germanic alphabet, originally used for writing, divination and magic as well, nowadays are mostly used as tattoos.

Originally, runes were used throughout northern Europe, the British Isles and Iceland from about 100 B.C. to 1600 C.E. and the word itself has the meaning of mystery, secret or whisper. Each of them has esoteric meanings and properties associated with it and each translated into a word or a phrase signifying concepts important to the early peoples who used them. The runes also represented the forces of nature and mind.

According to the above mentioned, there are several reasons why runes and runic symbols are so popular for covering and decorating bodies. Some people simply like the forms and shapes of runes and that’s why they use them, choosing favorite one. Some of them know more e.g. the meanings of the old runic symbols, the concepts they denoted and this is an only reason why they use them. It is obvious that this is a coming tendency-quite a lot of people use them as a means of decorating the bodies.

But sometimes it may have side effects. As it was mentioned above, each rune has its own meanings associated with something. These meanings may be positive or negative and may have a great impact on people’s life. That’s why Ingrid Halvorsen advises us to read about runic tattoos before doing it or to do temporary tattoos in order to get rid of them easily if necessary.

This issue is so popular on forums, where people share opinions with each other and ask advice or help each other to choose more appropriate runic symbol.

“I made a scarification of a Thurs-rune on my left upper arm like 20 years ago. I don't know if it has meant anything negative for me. I am like chronically followed by bad luck and misery. Things seem to worsen constantly”-says one man on one of the forums. Interesting and intriguing fact about this is that the meanings of the above mentioned rune are: Danger, defenselessness, compulsion, betrayal, dullness. Evil, malice, hatred, torment, spite, lies. A bad man or woman. Also it means reactive force, directed force of destruction and defense, conflict etc. all of them negative. If we remember the meaning of the word “rune”-magic, secret, etc, we will have strong basis of assumption that these old, ancient symbols may still have great (good or bad) impact on people’s lives.

So what is it, do runic symbols really have some special power according to their meanings or it is just a coincidence and nothing more? Unfortunately, the answer to the question is uncertain, even among scientists.

What an interesting article. I agree you should research the meaning of the runes before tattooing it on yourself
