When it comes to tattoo aftercare you really need to listen to the tattoo artist. They can tell you the best way to take care of your tattoo so that it will stay looking great for as long as possible. Here are the 6 things to keep in mind when taking care of your new tattoo.

1. Wrapping your tattoo. When your tattoo is finished the tattoo artist will apply some ointment and wrap your tattoo with a bandage to help keep your tattoo from getting infected. Your new tattoo can get infected by dirty hands, dirty clothing, or an airborne bacteria.

There are two options when it comes to wrapping your tattoo. The first one is using gauze. Using gauze allows your new tattoo to breathe which is important to help your tattoo heal. But will using gauze the blood and fluids that seep out will get on your clothing so make sure you wear something that you don't care about getting blook on. A downside of using gauze is that sometimes when it comes time to take it off the tattoo it will stick to your tattoo. If this happens use a cold damp sponge or clothe to get the area softened.

The other option is to use film wrap. This will hold in the blood and fluids form getting all over the place but it will also keep the air out form getting to your tattoo. Your tattoo can't breathe without air. If you do get the film wrap take it off after a maximum of 2 hours.

2. Washing your tattoo. You need to wash your tattoo 4 to 6 times a day to keep it clean and help with infection. Use non fragrant antibacterial soap to wash it. Do not use wash clothes or anything like that. Only use you fingertips. Pat it dry with a clean towel and do not rub it.

3. Ointment. After you wash your tattoo you will need to put on ointment. I recommend A & D ointment. Just apply some with your fingers. You don't need to put on a whole lot, just enough to keep your tattoo from drying out.

4. Clothes. Don't wear tight clothes that will rub up against the tattoo. Wearing tight clothing can take away the protective layer of skin covering the tattoo and will cause your healing time to increase. If you have new clothing make sure to wash it before you wear it over the tattooed area due to the fact that new clothes can have toxic chemicals in them that can harm your tattoo.

5. Sun and water. For at least the first month you need to keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight. This will cause your tattoo to fade or even get a sunburn. Also stay away from swimming in pools with chlorine or hot tubs. No swimming in public pools. Untill your tattoo is completely healed it could get infected by swimming in pools.

6. Scabbing and peeling. During the tattoo healing process it will scab and peel. This is a natural part of the tattoo healing process. Don't pick at the scabs, just let it fall off by itself. Also your tattoo will start to itch. Do not scratch it because this will mess up your tattoo. Just pat the area that itches with you fingers.

If you follow these tattoo aftercare steps you will have the best tattoo design that you ever thought possible. Now once you find your tattoo design and get it done you will know exactly how to take care of it and keep it looking good and infection free.
