Turtle Tattoo Designs

The turtle tattoo has certainly gained in popularity over the past few years. As a symbol meaning various things to cultures across the world turtle tattoo designs will remain popular for years to come. Turtles are graceful peaceful animals and are found in seas across the globe so it is no surprise to see them depicted so often. There are an awful lot of options open to you with a this tattoo and this article will I hope demystify some of the meanings behind the turtle design, give you an idea of placement and maybe just give you a new idea for your next tattoo.

Not surprisingly one of the most popular style of turtle tattoo designs is the Polynesian style or Hawaiian tattoo style. Obviously island nations such as the Polynesian or Hawaiian islands are surrounded by water and are therefore surrounded by turtles!! To the Polynesians, the turtle represents fertility and longevity, well turtles do live a long life, and this was recognised by the tribes of the Polynesian islands who revere the animal to this day. In the Hawaiian style of turtle the turtle or Honu is thought to represent a mother figure and the symbolism is again tied into fertility. Ancient turtle depictions show the Honu as a navigational aide, bold symbolism indeed for a sea fairing race.

Turtle tattoo designs are also seen in the Buddhist “Sak Yant” style of tattooing where it is thought that the turtle was a previous incarnation of the Buddha himself. Therefore the meanings bestowed upon the wearer of a Sak Yant tattoo are very much tied into the epitome of the Buddha namely compassion, wisdom and peace. In addition it is thought that the wearer will receive good luck and fortune.

So you’ve researched your perfect style of turtle, you like the meanings it represents and you feel that they are in keeping with you as a person? Where on the body should you get turtle tattoo designs inked? The foot is a popular placement of the turtle tattoo particularly in the tribal style, in addition shoulders are effective or the turtle can be incorporated into a larger piece such as a half sleeve or back piece. In the Buddhist style the back or calf are commonly used and can look great if done well.

Turtles are a great looking tattoo and are symbolised by many cultures including almost all of those that have a tattooing history. We should take the symbolism seriously and should research the type of designs that are out there as there are a great many to choose from. As with all tattoos, a little bit of research and a great artist will result in a tattoo you can be proud of.
