How Tea Helped England to Become A Prosperous Country

Tea in England not only became the part of its culture, but also contributed to the independence of the media, the emergence of design and was a belt of industrial revolution. Tea in many respects defined the foreign policy of England, drove the chaos in China and at the same time created an industry of India.

First, a small batch of tea was brought from China to Portugal in the 1550's, and there it did not cause interest. The first commercial shipment of tea arrived in Holland in 1610-m, but there the drink was also left unattended. By 50th years the tea in Europe became more popular, but its price was higher than the price of coffee, and it was used as a medical drug.

Around the same years for the first time people found out about PR, which later became the norm for the media. The Dutch East India Company hired a Danish doctor Cornelius Bonteko to write a series of articles (later the book was compiled) about the medicinal properties of tea. For example, in case of stomach diseases Bonteko advised to drink 50 cups of tea a day. This "PR" slightly increased sales of tea, but only among the wealthy Europeans. Tea for more than a half of a century continued to be an exotic product.

But now, more to the point. At the beginning of XVIII century, almost no one in the UK drank tea, but at the end of this century, almost everybody was drinking it. The volume of official imports increased from 6 tons in 1699 to 11,000 tons in 1799, while the price for a pound of tea during this time decreased by 20 times. Moreover, these figures do not include smuggling, which was almost the same. On the way to the final consumer tea is often mixed by rogue traders with ash, willow leaves, flowers, and therefore the final consumption has exceeded 20 percent on imports. These aspects of trading secured black tea as the main drink in England - because it was not only easier to transport it, but his "dilution" was easier to hide. From here it appeared the typically style of English drinking black tea with milk and sugar - not only for adding strength, but not to change its not really nice taste.

Tea became fashionable in England after 1662, after the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza - daughter of Portuguese King John IV. Her huge dowry included the Portuguese trading post in Tangier and Bombay, the right to sell the property of Portugal abroad, a large amount of gold and a box of tea. Catherine was a passionate lover of tea and brought the habit with her. And almost immediately in aristocratic circles it has become fashionable - to sip tea from small cups. A fashionable poet of the time Edmund Waller in 1663 composed a poem "About tea", which becomes a bestseller.

Now tea is used throughout the English society, from top to bottom. Tea wholesale business is one of the most developed among other food products wholesale market. A Frenchman in 1784 wrote in the travel notes about England: "The poor peasant interrupts his routine for tea twice a day, as well as the rich man. If you go out early in the morning, you can see placed in the open air tables, where sit carters and coal workers, emptying their cups with tea."
