Tea is probably one of the oldest known drinks. From all that I have read about tea it originated in China hundreds of years BC. Tea caught on later in other countries. Tea has known medicinal qualities are is basically dried leaves that are steeped in hot water. If you drink black tea then you are consuming a good measure of caffeine as you would if you drank a cup of coffee.

If you read my article on caffeine, it is an alkaloid which falls in the class of a psychoactive substance. Caffeine can be addicting and there seems to be some side effects if one drank a lot of tea or coffee then suddenly stopped or switched to a decaffeinated beverage. Many people have complained of headaches, fatigue, sleeplessness, restlessness and inability to concentrate well or work well without a cup of coffee or tea.

There are about as many varieties of teas as there are coffees on the market. One of the most popular teas is Black tea. Coffee shops like Star Bucks are now offering a variety of the more popular teas, such as Chai that is also very popular but is served a bit differently with milk and sugar and a certain combination of spices. There is also a white tea, yellow tea, oolong tea and the popular green tea.

Green teas seem to be a cure-all for a lot of ailments, including weight loss. Also, research has found green tea has been a beneficial treatment of cancer. It is hailed in lowering cholesterol, decreasing heart disease and will attack an infection. Herbal teas are caffeine free in addition to their medicinal benefits.

Herbal teas consist of dried fruits, all kinds of herbs and flowers. There is an herbal tea for just about any health issue one may have. The American Indians were very good at brewing herbal medicinal teas. Herbal teas have been used by many cultures because of their known health benefits. Many people believe in the medicinal qualities of a good cup of herbal tea for headaches, colds, arthritis, generalized pain, insomnia, restlessness, asthma, chest congestion, coughs and many more ills.

All teas originate from the Chinese Camellia Sinensis plant. White tea is produced from the very young leaves of this plant and only very delicately processed, unlike other teas. Different teas undergo different types of processing. I am not going to go into the specifics of the processing methods. I am really interested in the health benefits of herbal teas. Many of the health benefits of White Tea are the same as Green Tea. White Tea is also beneficial to the skin and mucus membranes of the mouth.

Oolong Tea is another excellent tea to drink if one is wanting to lose some weight. It has been reported that Oolong tea will block carbohydrates in your system, it helps to block body fat thus it is helpful in weight loss. It is also known to increase ones metabolism, thus is helpful in weight loss. I actually believe that Oolong teas would be somewhat more effect in this area then the Green Teas.

Yellow Teas have a sweeter flavor and a smoother taste. They have an abundance of antioxidants, thus are an excellent health benefit also.

You can go into most grocery stores and buy just about any kind of favor herbal tea you want. I do think that the health food and whole food stores may carry a fresher higher grade of medicinal tea. This may or may not be true.

So if you are interested in herbs for healing check into the various herbal teas and do some study on how you think that each tea may help you.

Good Luck and may you find improved health and wellness
