Driving Instruction - Planning A Training Route In Nottingham

Nottingham Planned Driving

Of all the aspects of driving instruction, the one most likely to upset your plans to provide training in small easy stages is the training route. A badly planned route can destroy the natural progression through increasing levels of difficulty. Lets take a look at some of the problems involved and how they can be overcome.

Let's say an instructor is conducting a lesson on basic junction procedure. The pupil is doing quite well and only needs occasional assistance. Until the pupil can deal with junctions correctly, consistently and entirely on their own they would not be asked to deal with more complex junctions. The aim would be to increase the difficulty in manageable stages until full mastery is achieved. This approach can be ruined by poor route planning. Should a pupil suddenly find themselves at a busy junction, on a hill with heavy traffic approaching both ways. The task demands would be too great.

In driving instruction a route is never a way from A to B. It is a teaching device. Our interest lies in what the pupil will learn by following the route. A training route should therefore be thought of as a set of tasks. The tasks created by the route should be at a suitable level for the pupil's learning stage. Other tasks on the route would be the ones set by the instructor such as reversing manoeuvres.

Routes are usually divided into three main categories usually referred to as Nursery Routes, Intermediate and Advanced Routes. Planning these routes in advance can have big advantages. If you are working for one of the driving schools in Nottingham you will know that areas such as West Bridgford can provide excellent nursery routes suitable for a complete beginner. Forest Fields provides excellent advanced routes when giving driving lessons in Nottingham to a pupil who is about test standard.

Many driving instructors do not consider the difficulty level of the routes in advance and try to match them to the abilities of the pupil. Many times a learner can be seen struggling through the city centre causing danger and inconvenience to other road users. This is not the fault of the pupil but of the instructor. A route with too great a level of difficulty will scare a new learner whereas a route which is too difficult would bore a more experienced student and inhibit learning. So consider your route carefully. It is a tool of the driving instructor's trade.

The three difficulty levels stated should form a continuum which progresses naturally from one level to another. Also the element of the syllabus being taught should be considered. If you are teaching procedures to deal with junctions then long open roads will not suffice and a suitable area must be found. Be careful how far away the area is. New learners may need to be driven there and will not tolerate too much lesson time being used for this. They have paid to drive and expect to do so. Using a driving lesson to pick up another pupil who the drives the other one home is completely unacceptable. 'Piggy Backing' as it is reffered to is a thing of the past and never should have been common practise.

So , those who teach driving should have a thorough knowledge of the area they work in, have a selection of routes prepared that have varying difficulty levels and be able to match these to the ability of the pupil they are teaching at any given time when helping people to become safe and competent drivers.
