How To Teach English In China

Knowing exactly how to teach English in China is the first thing you should be concerned with. It's one thing to say "I'd like to do that", but it's another thing entirely to actually go ahead and do it.

There are some great attractions to teaching in China, and you will get a decent salary and good benefits. More importantly, the process of getting hired is not amazingly difficult either. Further down this article I'll introduce you to some methods of getting hired, but first I'm going to talk about why you should go to China, and the general requirements expected.

Why Teach English In China?

Apart from having a rich history and culture, China offers some great perks to its English teachers. In many cases you could receive free language lessons, free accommodation (or money towards it) and a good salary to go along with them. The opportunity for saving money while experiencing another side of the world is very high in China.

Compared with other countries in Asia, Europe and South America, China has to be one of the top earning destinations.

Moreover, the country is coming on leaps and bounds in terms of its progress. Technology is booming and infrastructure is being upgraded and overhauled at high speeds. It's an exciting time to be in China right now, and as an English teacher, you would get to witness it firsthand.

How To Teach English In China

Like many countries, there are requirements that you need to match in order to qualify for a visa and work permit. If you don't meet this criteria, it will be very difficult to find work out there.

First, you'll need to have a passport from a native English-speaking country. This means The US, The UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, and South Africa. This is a visa requirement set by the Chinese government.

Secondly, you'll need to have a University degree. The subject shouldn't matter too much (although the more relevant it is, the better your chances of getting hired), as long as it is from a recognized institution. Again, this is part of the work-permit/visa process, so isn't negotiable.

You'll also need a TEFL/TESOL/CELTA or equivalent teaching certificate. In many companies, this is the bare minimum required for employment, while other places, such as international schools or Chinese high schools, will want you to have a higher level certificate, like a PGCE or teaching license in your home country.

The TEFL might not necessarily be a visa requirement, but it is still recommended you have one. It is a competitive world and your chances of finding a job will be much higher if you do have one.

Finding Employment

China is a big place, so there are lots of opportunities and always schools looking for teachers. However, it can be pretty tricky to track down good schools and get your foot in the door. Do you even know where to look?

The best thing for you to do is contact a specialist English teacher recruitment agency that is in contact with many schools. They'll be able to find the best jobs for you, and help place you in them.

The best part about all this is that the schools pay the agency to find them the best teachers, so the service is free for you the teacher.

It also means that the agency is going to want their teachers to stay and complete their contract, meaning they will only choose the best schools to work with.
