Working abroad is an excellent opportunity to travel and see the world, and by teaching English in Taiwan, you can easily make that opportunity a reality. As long as you come from a native English-speaking country and have a university degree (in any subject), you will qualify for a work permit, and more importantly, will be in high demand for a job teaching.
There are literally thousands of regular schools and language schools looking for teachers, so anybody who meets the above criteria is in a good position. It is also wise to get a teaching certificate such as a TESOL, CELTA, or equivalent. Not only will this put you in a better position for higher paid jobs, but it will help you become a better teacher. Some schools require a teaching certificate before they'll offer you a contract.
Why Taiwan?Perhaps the safest country you will ever visit, Taiwanese people pride themselves on their friendliness, willingness to help strangers, and above all, their food. You will never get bored of eating the same thing, or run out of strange aromas and exotic delicacies with all the Taiwanese night markets on offer. equally, you will never struggle to get something you need, because even if you meet someone who can't speak English, they will go out of their way to find someone who can.
As well as the people, the country itself is amazing. Named "Beautiful Island" (Isle de Formosa) by the Portuguese sailors who were the first Europeans to sail past it, Taiwan's scenery doesn't fail to disappoint. From rolling hills and mountains, to thick ancient forests, there is so much nature that you would never get tired of exploring it.
The cities themselves are modern and relatively clean. Safety is not as issue, with the biggest crime in Taipei (the capital), to be scooter theft. Walking around at night by yourself is perfectly fine, although people are so friendly, you will rarely be alone.
Taiwan is also located in a part of Asia that makes it very convenient for travelling to other countries. China, Japan, Korea, The Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the South-East Asian countries are all within four hours by plane, some of them even less.
What Is The Salary Like?It differs from school to school, but the average school will pay $20 USD per hour, with 20-30 hours per week. Those with higher qualifications such as a teaching license from their own country can get much higher.
The cost of living in Taiwan is very low too, with rent and a comfortable life-style, you can save a decent amount of money over the course of a year. Eating out is cheap, the average meal in Taipei can cost as little as $3-5 USD and public transport is equally cheap.
Those who want to save money can do so easily here, but those who want to have a more party lifestyle, enjoying every minute they have there, can afford to do that with their monthly income too.
How To Find A Job?There are lots of recruitment agencies out there who will do the hard work for you. The reason I recommend one of these is because they are free for you to use, and they want to provide the best teachers to the best schools. If their candidate does not enjoy the job and leaves, the recruitment agency might lose their fee (the school pays the fee), so the better agencies will do their best to fit every candidate with a suitable school.
Boy, how intriging ... if I were only 20 years younger ... :)
